I never beat the last boss of FF13-2. At the end, there's about an hour-long sequence of fights and if you fail any part of it, you have to start all over. After I think the fifth failure, I just looked up the ending on youtube.

One game I liked very much where I gave up on the boss is Serious Sam: Second Encounter. I almost killed that boss but too many of those green lizard enemies spawned with those green fireballs that sapped my health too quickly.
The big final boss who teleports all over the arena? Yeah, that battle was idiotically hard, and that's coming from someone who beat the First Encounter without any cheats. Even after enabling god mod it took an absurd amount of time to finish him off.
As easy as games are these days, you pretty much have to go oldschool or indie for examples of ones that are legitimately too difficult to beat. In the latter category, Bit.Trip Runner comes to mind. Fuck that game sideways with a chainsaw.

Seriously. "The last pixel of your foot touched the step you were trying to jump over? Restart the level! LOL!"

I've ragequit more NES games than I care to remember and I can't honestly see why people have so much trouble with bit.trip.runner. It's probably the easiest of the bit.trip games, too.

Homeworld. I love it to bits but the last level is total bullshit if you've raised up a decent fleet thanks to its compensatory difficulty scheme.

Captain Skyhawk on NES, one of Rare's earlier games, was fun but too finicky and difficult for me to complete. It was always hard to tell where your plane was in relation to the terrain and enemy fire.
I actually made it to the final boss once after like two hours of sweating through the rest of the game and was shot down almost immediately to a game over. I never tried again, although I was since able to complete it using an emulator with a rewind button. It was still tough as hell.

Anyone who claims to have finished either Contra or Gradius is a lying bastard. I destroyed a controller in my epic ragequit of the latter.
Mr.Duck on 17/4/2013 at 08:35
Call me a lying bastard then. Finished Contra with and without the Konami code. And Super C too.
Gradius on the other hand....will get back to you shortly!
:D
Save states a-go-go!

When it comes to NES games, the one I've specifically never beaten outside of save-scumming in an emulator is Punch Out. Against Sandman and Tyson I pretty much quicksaved everytime I dodged/landed a punch.

The final boss-battle* of Batman: Arkham Asylum against the Titan injected Joker. I came so close to beating him the first time, but after that I got progressively worse. Tried again several times over the following two weeks, but I wasn't having fun anymore.
Also annoyed about quitting at the last timed** race/sprint segment in Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath HD.
Almost forgot! In the final level of Thief there's a bit were you get swept up by a river current as you're entering Constantine's lair. My health was too low to survive … and my previous save too far back.

(*) Yeah, I've been told more than once this wasn't even the hardest battle in the game.
(**) GAWD! How I loath timed anything segments!
