Homeworld. I love it to bits but the last level is total bullshit if you've raised up a decent fleet thanks to its compensatory difficulty scheme.
My fleet of salvage ships was probably bigger than my actual cap ship fleet. Send in the fighters to buzz the shit out of a capship then flank with your salvage ships.
Those Ion Frigates from the two Garden of Kadesh levels were absolutely awesome once they were yours.

Anyone who claims to have finished either Contra or Gradius is a lying bastard. I destroyed a controller in my epic ragequit of the latter.
Watched him do it first-hand. No bullshit Mr. Duck savestates either. NES on a 13' CRT telly.
@Moyer: I beat Tyson on the NES when the game was new.

This. I couldn't bear to lose those two, they were that brilliant. Don't forget to capture 'em, they make the succeeding levels that much easier.

The first homeworld? It had compensatory difficulty, but it only had 3 levels of it. Quite easy to completely outclass the last mission.
And multi-beam frigates were pretty good. But the absolute best ships to capture in the entire game are the missile corvettes from mission 2 and 3. Their special attack was practically a cheat.

How do you lose to Venom Joker? He's piss-easy, particularly compared to Ivy or those two Venom henchmen he sics on you at the end.

Since we are rocking old school ill toss in Megaman 4 on the nes. Together with dizzy it was my favorite game on the console. I got all the way to the final boss but never got past it since last code/savepoint always required you to go through multiple levels and refight all the previous bosses first so id be too low on resourced by the time id get to him.
I did finally beat him (and dizzy) decade later with emulators and save states.

Megaman 4's final boss is piss easy. Just bring lots of Pharoah Shot. You don't really need anything else.
Now, Megaman 7 on the other hand...

The Turanic corvettes? How do you capture them? They're extremely slippery and salvage corvettes aren't exactly the most maneuverable.

Distract them, with like...fighters or something. Pull the fighters back, move the salvage corvettes in from the back: done. Missile corvettes are aces.
I got a bit stupid on the level with the huge sphere o' ion frigates and capped them all (move in, attract attention from two or three, drag back to the "salvage camp", rinse, repeat) which meant that at the next level (the giant asteroid heading to the mothership) my fleet was so wide that stuff on the periphery couldn't get anywhere near the asteroid before it made the mothership go *POOF*.
