Why can't a Vampire be scared?
Because his health regenerates.

He's not invulnerable. And hell, in the face of some things (like, let's say some kind of Lovecraftian horror) he may as well be mortal anyway. When you're dealing with something that can rip your skin off and make a hat out of it, being a vampire isn't going to help.

Because you are on one scripted ride outta there? Hell, could you even get substantially hurt in that level? Maybe you could, but if so they didn't do a good job of showing me. As far as I could tell it was all show and no substance ...
The elevator crashing will kill you if you don't dodge it, but otherwise you'd only suffer some damage from a couple of tossed items, some hot gasses and the fires near the end. None of which is threatening.
The atmosphere was decent enough for me to ignore it being a guided tour.

I'm with Thirith about how it wasn't genuinely creepy, but effective and atmospheric like a haunted house at a funfair. Personally, I thought it borrowed a bit too much from The Shining, a movie which IMO was similarly well made but also not as creepy as it could have been.
What really made the entire quest worthwhile for me was the bit right at the end, when I gave the pendant to Jeanette, only to find out later from a furious Therese that she'd thrown it into the ocean in a fit of capriciousness, thus dooming the house to be haunted forever. I don't know why, but imagining that made me grin.
I don't share the rest of Thirith's opinion about the game, though; RPGs with as much intriguing narrative, depth, and sheer verve - for lack of a better term - simply don't get made these days.

I was well, well into the lower reaches of the health bar towards the end of the fiery sequences.

You guys misunderstood me. You're not invulnerable because you're a vampire, but if the world is filled with vampires and werewolves then what's in a ghost to be scared about? I think the scariest part about meeting a ghost would be more "oh my god, what is that thing, my entire world view is SHATTERED" and less "oh my god it's trying to kill me", and with the things that were established about the game universe by that point I might as well get scared by any street hooligan.

You may want to listen to the conversation between Therese and the vampire character before he/she takes the quest.
As for the scariness of the mission,
I was mildly relieved to be able to leave the hotel at the end.

Ocean House is no Cradle but it is creepy.
Thirith on 29/12/2008 at 09:03
Since the first part of the Cradle is perhaps the scariest level I've ever played, I must say that to me it's secondary whether I can get hurt or not. Fear, at least to me, has more to do with stimulating my imagination; reloading because I've died may be annoying, but it's not scary.
Edit: All this talk of Bloodlines makes me think I should get the game out and play it (with the inofficial patches)... My first playthrough was with a Malkavian (of course) - any suggestions for my second one?
