Who here uses a fancy mouse for their gaming or general computer use? Do you think it's necessary? Or do you hold on to your generic mouse because you figure the gadgets are a waste of time?
I'm interested in everybody's thoughts on the matter. I've been using a Microsoft Intellipoint 2 button w/ scroll wheel optical mouse for years and years. It took a little bit of persuasion to move away from a ball mouse, but I find that I'm quite satisfied.
Then I bought this years Dream Machine issue of MaximumPC and saw the coolest looking mouse I"ve ever seen in my life, they used it on their dream machine and I decided I had to get it.
Why? Because I wanted to have one nice thing. (I guess 2 nice things. since now I have eyefinity too) Normally I"m not a computer hardware fanatic. I'm still running my Core 2 Quad, it'll be years before it's too slow to keep up, i'm sure. I know it isn't really old tech or anything, but normally I'm not the guy sitting on the bleeding edge.
And yet I spent 100 bucks on a mouse. I can program Macros into it. It has a horizontal scroll wheel so it helps when I'm doing audio editing, I can navigate the timeline much easier...
It took a few days to get used to how it felt, I found myself being quite sluggish in games at first, but now I'm back on top. Funny thing is I'm not even using the customizable stuff for games... I'm using it for my audio utilities. Screw Keyboard shortcuts.
here it is: Saitek Cyborg R.A.T. 7:

Generic Microsoft laser mouse. It's fairly chunky so more comfortable for someone with big hands (me) and has four buttons and a mouse wheel. I can't see myself ever paying that much on a mouse of all things- $100 is practically a down payment on a new graphics card, and I've never seen features that justify the price to me.

Nothing Fancy. I've got a Logitech Mx518 that I've been using for almost six years now. Still working fine.

Holy shit, VA, that thing is atrocious.

Gotta admit, I've blown more then I should've on various mice. So far, the best one I've had was the Logitech MX-1000. Lots of buttons, and most importantly, they're actually each use to. The old 500 series were nice, but fewer available buttons, as was the MS sidewinder too.
I'm currently using a G700, but to be honest, it ain't very good. While the DPI on the fly is nice, I haven't had much use for it. And while it's got more buttons then the old MX-1000, they're much less convenient. I can only comfortably and reliably hit the front 2 of the 4 side buttons, and the top 3 extras are functionally useless - entirely too hard to reach, much less differentiate.
It's not a bad mouse - just doesn't have the good ergonomics the 1000 didn't. That said, it's sure as hell a shitload better then the Razer Lachesis. What a shitter that thing was.
I'd go back to the MX1000, but the left button has become unresponsive from heavy use, and you can't get them repaired.

Damn, Volition. I think I have one of those things shifting gears on my bike.
All I've got is a Logitech V220 laptop mouse. I used to have a full sized mouse, but I realized I can do incredibly precise small movements better with a light mouse. Considering I need to do that quite a bit, I went ahead and bought one as my main.
It's cheap. It's wimpy. But it works surprisingly well for what I need.

Logitec corded laser mouse, stolen from my high school computer lab some years ago. It's three button, wheeled and has been instrumental in turning many a NPC into chunky salsa. One of the buttons has popped loose in the front but its still works fine, aside from looking like a beetle about to take off in flight. I'm probably getting a trackball next since those are much more foreign surface friendly.

I am still using my ball mouse with 5 buttons. I just am way too accustomed to them. I have optical and laser mice, but they are not intuitive to me in games. General PC applications? They are fine, but I am just not as effective in games without my 5-button ball mouse.

Recently bought a wireless Logitech MX1100 to replace my aging MX100. Happy as a clam with my gaming rodent, wireless mice have really come a long way.
I've put hands on that RAT in a local Fry's, it is a ridiculous looking thing, but fairly comfortable, providing support for all the important points in the hand while being designed to look skeletal. I'd be more concerned with dirt and dead skin getting in all those nooks and crannies, gumming up the works, though. Or would having it open like that make it easier to clean? Hard to say.
Volitions Advocate on 29/9/2010 at 04:53
I don't think cleaning it would be difficult. all the skeletal parts come off with little effort, the enclosed parts are as safe as any other mouse.
Like I said, i haven't used it much for games (to its full potential anyway) but I've found it very helpful for my editing software.
... eheh, I think it looks like the Nolans Batmobile.. a little
What is the name of that mouse with the whole numpad on the side of it? I always thought it looked ridiculous. Anybody here use one?
