I use a Razer Copperhead.

http://www.esl-shop.net/images/shop_razer_copperhead_tempest_blue.jpg_big.jpgIt´s got the on-the-fly DPI switching thingy and more buttons than I have fingers which I barely use. The buttons, not the fingers.
I can´t decide if the best thing about it is the glowing blue LED or the fact that I don´t have to use a mouse pad anymore because of this awesome optical sensor Eva already mentioned. This sensor would probably work on gravel too.

Cleaning out the ball once per month won't kill me. And cat fur, ha ha ha.
I knew that one would be good for you. You're welcome. :)

I throw my mouse around a lot(that is, physically pick it up and put somewhere else or even in the same place but at a different angle) which doesn't work all that well with optical mouses.
Like Eva said, that's not an issue with this mouse.

I've used 2 laser mice, both have which have been my favourite ones out of all the mice I've tried over the years. Both have been Microsoft mice, the Laser Mouse 6000 and the Habu. The 6000 is now my work mouse while I use the Habu at home.
I gave up on Logitech mice eventually having owned all the major ones and being disappointed in the shoddy build quality of every last one. Skates ALWAYS fall off of Logitech mice, and both the 518s I owned died in exactly the same way after the same period of time. The mx1000 charging station's contact points corroded to the point of being useless. The 510 I owned died in a similar way to the 518s.
Also, the finish on Logitech mice always rubbed off leaving unsightly marks on the mouse.
But the Microsoft mice just keep going. Solid, reliable and accurate. I'm no longer having to buy a new mouse every 6 months as was the case with the Logitech ones.

Deathadder uses an awesome Optical sensor too, not some god awful Laser one like a lot of gaming mice have. Running on an engine technology that's known for its inaccuracy and only working on limited surfaces, like is the case with laser? No thanks.
I've got the same mouse as you. Since I mainly use it with my laptop, I bought a little Razer mousepad that can fit between the keyboard and screen when the computer's closed. With the pad, the mouse works brilliantly. But on any other surface it definitely has problems. And on some strange surfaces, like ceramic tile (not smooth) it can't read at all. The laser mice I've used have all worked fine on the surfaces the deathadder can't recognize.

I have a really simple mouse yet I like it. It's the Razer Krait gaming mouse, it's wired (don't like wireless), optical, and while it has only three buttons, I like this mouse. I believe it's the cheapest mouse that Razer sells.

I had a Microsoft Intellimouse 2.0. But one day it died, so I went to the store to get a new one. This one was 20$, and I wanted to try something new:

http://www.mrgadget.com.au/uploaded_images/Logitech_marble_mouse_trackball_blog-749054.jpgTook me some time to get used to, but it proved that you don't need a fancy mouse for anything. I never use those extra buttons anyway; I enjoy simple control schemes. But eventually the button sensors wore out so I got one of these:

I used to play CS with a trackball (it was all I had at the time) and after a while I got pretty accurate, which I never would have expected

I always just buy "generic 10 quid optical mouse, preferably not PS2", since I'll inevitably smash it in some childish outburst of drunken rage after being headshotted for the umpteenth time by some asshat in BC2, or similar. :erg:
Annoyingly, when drunk, I'm very slow to make the connection between "drunk" and "questionable decision making and atrocious reaction times"
