Y'know, I have forgotten of the -other- slice of gaming which, oddly hasn't taken THAT much of my time, but it is there, it is great, and it's one layer up of extra gaming: mods.
Damn....and there are -sooooooooo- many great mods out there to play.
I've yet to play dethy's much mentioned Afraid Of Monsters: Director's Cut and I really want to...must make a Mod Week or Mod Month then...
That's a promise, january the 7th, 2011, God willing that I'm still alive, no new purchases for half a year to see how the backlog fares.
Hey deth, I'm curious, what's your baclog?, if you don't mind publishing it :)
june gloom on 14/11/2010 at 23:06
I don't really have a backlog. I just play whatever the mood strikes me, and I don't feel like I have to play something just 'cuz I hadn't played it yet.
Mr.Duck on 15/11/2010 at 00:44
My sentiments exactly, I do get sidetracked easily by other games....heh.
Still, I have fun :), which is what counts in the end.
I'm just going to force myself to have fun at even cheaper prices (mostly console games, don't have much trouble with PC).

You paid for the game. You shouldn't take chances with some modified executable by Joe in his parents' basement. Why would you support any company that subjects you to such things?
So you're saying you won't buy anything from Steam (or GOG for that matter) because they modified the executable of every game they sell? That's silly.
Also, yeah I fucking hate it when games require you to use a CD too, but are you seriously going to cry me a river over it? Most games these days on PC (if you buy digitally) don't require the CD, so it's not like every game you own you have to stick in a CD... And even if you do , so what? it's a minor annoyance. As NV said, you could go download a NO-CD patch for the game.

Simple - STALKER is always hanging over my head, that behemoth that I always intend to get back to but am constantly distracted by some new CoH, Bioshock, or Mass Effect.

It might surprise you, but the difference between people "stealing" games and addink buying them from bargain bins is next to zero as far as the publisher(and thus by extention, the developer) is concerned. When people "steal" a game, they get a product and don't give the publisher money; when addink buys a re-release, exactly same thing happens. The money goes to some third party which had nothing to do whatseover with either paying for or making the game.
But it's not exactly the same thing, regardless what the publishers say. For Addink to buy a game used, someone at some point had to buy the game new. The publishers have received money for at least one copy. That's quite a bit different than piracy, where if the pirate never gets around to buying the game, the publisher never sees dime one from that potential customer.
I've always found the whole used games are killing the industry argument to be pretty damn stupid anyway. People have been swapping around bullshit that someone else bought new for years and years now. It's been going on for decades with the movie and music industry, and for probably a couple of centuries with the publishing industry. In all that time, none of those industries have come close to collapse. And you know why? Because they're not actually
losing money from third party transactions.
In other words, if I write and self publish a book, and sell 5 million bucks worth, then guess what? I've made 5 million bucks. If someone who bought my book new from the store sells it to his friend, I haven't lost anything at all. Money isn't mysteriously taken out of my bank account. All I can do in that situation is complain that I could've made
more money if the guy's friend bought it new, and then go on a petulant bitch spree about how these people are practically taking food out of my mouth and end up looking like a greedy fuck in front of everyone.
As long as I've covered the costs of production and advertising, and am able to live comfortably on the profits to do it again, then the capitalist system of commerce has done me good. Any more is just a bonus.
Woohoo.
edit: I think the biggest problem with the games industry isn't piracy or 3rd party sales. It's the near unsustainable methods they employ to make their games. Right now, it costs too much money to make a game. Plain and simple.

No, I fully support GOG. There is a difference between an officially patched game and one some guy in the basement hacked (and might have incorporated malware too). The CD thing is not just an annoyance when you're using a computer without a CD drive. Its a deal-breaker. Should I be obligated to lug around an external drive to satisfy the CD-checking malware because I want to play games on my EEE PC?
