No thread on this? Not out in the US?
We went last night because I just go all the stuff I reckon might be alright with a Cineworld card (£15/month lets you watch as many films as you want and as they are £7ish a pop you only need to see three and it's been worth it).
I was pleasantly surprised. Its an oldskool gangster romp that's pretty hard edged and it whizzes along at a fair pace. Top performances by all involved and some satisfying ridiculous Thompson SMG (Tommy-gun) ratatat action (plus a strategically placed MP40 for all you WW2 gun nerds).
It's not cerebral, its not complicated, but it is fun and it is surprisingly tense at points. I love the style of the era and this was plenty stylised.
Penn was out there enough so that I forgot it was him, which is my personal mark of a good performance a la Denzel in Training Day (the only thing I think he's any good in) and Cruise in Valkyrie, but everyone else was solid too, especially Brolin and why don't we see more of this guy? Oh God don't mention the Oldboy remake why, just why? Ok, off topic now.
See it. Make progress.

I heard it was a poor man's The Untouchables.

Also, crap title.

The film or the thread?
If you mean film; I thought so too but about 30 minutes in realised it was perfect.
If you mean the thread; yeah, I didn't try hard enough.

It's whatever you don't want it to be, baby.

Pretty sure Sean Penn had a CG face in the trailers... why? Is it like that in the film too?

A tonally schizophrenic lovechild of LA Confidential and The Untouchables given a crude lobotomy.

??
It's a different genre, surely, much like Start Wars vs Fifth Element.

Uh... sure. Was the movie I metaphorically described even in a genre?
It was dumb, broad, violent, sorta fun but nothing special. I'm glad I saw it for free.
