Search still seems broken but it's hard to believe I can't find any comparison with Oblivion's spriggans (
http://www.uesp.net/wiki/File:OBCreature-Spriggan.jpg) The moment I first heard that laughter it was clear to me that these wood spirits must have been inspired by Viktoria. It's the same behind-your-back giggles and the creatures are much how I would visualize Viktoria. I tried to avoid killing those creatures so maybe my Garrett persona is still in love... (to keep on topic!)

Possibly! Is Emil Pagliarulo connected with the Oblivion titles that had the spriggans? Regardless, it's possible. And Oblvion has will o' the wisp, too, but no ent-like creatures?

Actually, both Victoria and the Spriggans probably origins from norse/scandinavian mythology like so many other creatures in modern fantasy. The Skogsrå, or Huldra is a very well known entity here in Scandinavia.
Half woman, half tree she seduces men who dares venture into her forest and makes them serve her purposes. Much like trolls or gnomes they aren't really evil beings, but extensions of various (Dangerous) natural elements. (Good and evil didn't really exist here until christianity introduced those concepts).

Seriously people, they're dryads, how were they supposed to make them look like? And no, dryads are not scandinavian, they're greek. Alternatively they're scottish Ghillie Dhu, but who cares, I bet every culture in the world has its own version of wood spirits.
On topic, I feel that the romance between Garrett and Viktoria was very much inclined, to the point of deliberate juxtaposition of first and last missions in the game - in the first one Garrett "equals feelings with getting caught", in the last he goes after Karras seemingly only because he's so angry >:((((( that Viktoria died.

Oh yes, the 'tree spirit' in various guises is an ancient mythology; I used it myself in the pagan writings in Heart of Lone Salvation. What was interesting here is the direct connection being the man who worked both on Thief and Oblivion both with similar creatures - especially significantly, the laughter.
I see no reason why Viktoria can't be resurrected in Thief 4. Happens in movies all the time and I'm sure they could work out some surviving root or something that grows forth again as V. But from what I hear we might not even get Garrett.

Yes, movies and tv shows are prone to crap writing and resurrecting characters when they can't think of something better, instantly undermining noble death and the impact of the loss.
If there's a wood nymph, who isn't Viktoria as we knew her, that's better, but it's still trying to fill a gap that is best left open.
