I'm curious to know if there are other characters out there similar to Garrett (the real Garrett, not NuGarrett), whether in books, games, movies, etc? I'm not talking about the thief aspect necessarily, but his persona and attitude: the delightful cynicism, sarcasm, dry humour, world-weary loner mentality, etc.
Not sure if there's a thread on this already

Hmm... this may sound a bit odd, but Catwoman?
Also, it's a bit of a long shot, but maybe Locke Lamora from The Lies of Locke Lamora fits the bill a little bit? At least as far as being cocky and sarcastic is concerned.

Elements of Ash Williams from the Evil Dead series, especially the third installment "Army Of Darkness". John McClane from "Die Hard" to a certain degree.
Bogart's portrayal of Sam Spade in "The Maltese Falcon", which greatly influenced the "Film Noir" genre as a whole.

Emerald Flint from Aquanox certainly reminded me of Garrett. He is some kind of underwater pirate but (unlike Garrett) always fights for good.
Nathan Zachary from Crimson skies also reminded me of Garrett a little bit.
I wonder why no one mentioned before but Indiana Jones also has a similar attitude. You could also consider him some kind of "thief".

Han Solo too, he's got that laid back attitude, and world weary type of personality. He used to be with an organized group too, but broke away and now freelances.

Well, he's more of a tough guy, but (
https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Chronicles_of_Riddick:_Escape_from_Butcher_Bay) Riddick hits sort of the same anti-hero spot. And he matches about the same criterias you listed, "delightful cynicism, sarcasm, dry humour, world-weary loner mentality". If you haven't already, i'd give Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena a go, which features both Riddick games, and is a lot of fun, especially if you're into stealth games. Some of my favorite games.

I remember several Looking Glass people mentioning that Garrett was modeled after a Film Noir protagonist, and I have to agree. He's sort of the classic, hard-boiled Private Eye: Sarcastic, downbeat, in it for the money, armed with nothing but dry wit and skill. A 'leggy dame' convinces him to take on 'one last job' and he's off to the races.
Philip Marlowe - particularly in 'Murder, My Sweet' (1944) - definitely fits the bill. As does Sam Spade. Johnny from 'Gilda' (1946) is a bit closer to the mark: A criminal who has the entire world conspire against him, but somehow manages to be one step ahead. There's more than a few characters that fit that mold in the genre. (Alan Ladd in 'This Gun For Hire', for example).
