You know, one thing that always bothered me about TMA was that in the very beginning, Garrett mentions one of the reasons for his undertaking the Rumford job as being that Basso would owe him a favor. I mean, this is the guy he rescued from Cragscleft in TDP - that man already owes him a huge favor.
Furthermore, in all of the Thief series, Basso never actually returns either of those favors he owes. I would have thought it'd make good sense for Basso to play some minor role later on in the story - supply some much needed information or perhaps give Garrett a safe refuge from the City Watch, or something like that. But that never happens. He becomes more or less a throw-away character.
What do the rest of you think?

From what I remember basso did teach him how to pick locks (or something to do with lockpicks anyway) better right after he saved his girlfriend or what-not.
All in all I agree with you a bit, I would've liked some more minor or even larger involvement with this interesting character. Well, at least he's into some FMs, some really good ones too.

True Basso did not, as far as the story goes.
But what I think is you have a character flaw. If you don't know to what I refer, it's not worth discussing.

IT'S A shame you don't see basso in later episodes : they should bring him back in, and not leave him as a throw-away character....:(:angel::grr::thumb::idea:

No, Garrett was already a skilled lock-picker in TDP. It's just that he didn't take his lock-picks with him in the first mission (since I guess that would have ruined the whole point of needing Basso's help to unlock Jenivere's door, eh?).

That was my thought. It was a insight into -- and a bit of foreshadowing -- the character's true self.
;) I think "You heard what I said, but I did not say what you heard". I should have emphasised the
you. :cheeky:

Am I to understand you meant I have a character flaw?

It's been a while since I played TDP , but I thought the whole reason behind Craigscleft was to rescue Cutty, who consequently died before Garret could get him out.
Basso has supplied tips in alot of FM's ,but for the most part I see him as a freeloader that only comes around when he needs something.
Will have to talk to Jenivere, and see if she couldn't think of something to square up Basso's debts.:cheeky:

The idea that Basso the Boxman/Firelighter (blowing up a safe gone wrong?) taught Garrett more about lockpicking and safe-cracking is my favorite one, inferred only by the doubling of door locks and safes in TMA. I think Basso did something for him already, in the years between leaving the Keepers and before the Bafford job, to gain G's respect and favor more than any other character. One thing I've wondered is what the odds were that Garrett could know any of his associates from his youth on the streets.
And then there was the big jump in lockpicking skills in TDS, though there were far fewer safes to crack.
TDS utterly dropped all but two of Garrett's associates (new ones at that--Heartless Perry, and an unnamed one), after the dozen or so mentioned before. He knew none of the others, or at least, no one knew him or who he'd heard of. In the older titles, he had some very amicable relationships with other thieves and thiefspawns, guys that would help him out without asking anything in return that we ever saw. And yeah, there was Sammy in TMA's Ambush that sold him out.
Sangar, Zhan, Manny Jabrielle, Dikket, Rudyard, Issyt, Giry, Tundis, an unnamed storekeeper that gave G a tip, Cutty, and a few other unnamed associates we never saw--gone, like Basso and his wife Jenivere (barring them getting killed or incarcerated). It would seem G's attempt to hook up with Basso's sister didn't pan out, since all mention of lust disappeared fromt he rest of the story.
"You've had your eye on Basso the Boxman's sister for a while now. If you break him out of Cragscleft, she'll probably be VERY grateful."
"Locate and release Basso the Boxman."
Oh, and who's this Craig that has a cleft, so often mentioned? :sly:

You forgot Bertha in TDS. :)
