There are mixed opinions about the main character choice in T4. Some want Garrett, some want the girl with Garrett as her master and some want just the girl. Now, how would you want Garrett's story to end? Personally, I want it to be a secret. After some epic aftermath, his body is never found and he disappears. :)

I think the worst case would be something involving that girl. Anything involving her would be a emotion-based mainsteam storyline. It just wont work in a game like Thief. Garrett is a lone thief, not a mentor or fatherlike figure. That's just not Thief. That's your sims right there.
I would like the Thief-chapter to be fully closed, so making an epic last sacrifice to end the saga would be breathtaking, yet still it wouldn't be very thief-like. He's not there to save the city... but if there's any hero who could make such a sacrifice reallt spectacular, it would be him.

I hate the idea of the cliche "self-sacrifice' story line--has to save the girl, since he is the One-True-Uber-Keeper now, blah blah blah. But, I can see that turning out to be about the only plausible story line to end Garrett.
Voted for disappearing without a trace...

I voted something else, so I guess that demands an explanation:
I think back to one of the last lines in "The Last of the Mohicans".
"...We'll be no more, or be not us..."
-Chingochgook
This applies to Garrett as a character. If he changes fundamentally then he is no longer the character we followed from the first games. I hate to say it but Thief is not a character story, and Garrett isn't strong enough of a character narratively to withstand fundamental change. Thief is a Milieu story, which means that it follows the world and environment almost as a character all its own. Whatever protagonist we follow must fit within the confines of the established Milieu, as to move contrary to it will draw the audience out of immersion.
Don't worry though, as Thief keeps good company. Lord of the Rings is thought of as a Milieu story as well.
So Garrett is limited to the "atmosphere" set forth by the story medium. A good example of a character breaking milieu can be found in the Metal Gear series. Raiden in MGS2. He felt pretty awkward and jarring didn't he?
As far as Garrett dying? I guess it's possible, but I think then of this old quote:
"Old soldiers never die, they just fade away."
I feel as though Garrett also falls into this group as well. He's no soldier, but that's not the point of the quote. He has a fighting spirit, an enduring will that no man creature or god has yet to dampen. A dramatic death doesn't seem to fit Garrett. If he goes, it will be quiet and unheard of out in the night somewhere. Not very exceptional narratively speaking. To do so with great drama seems contrary to his character.
So like the soldier, I see Garrett as just fading away. Withering into obscurity. I know that sounds like I should have voted for the unexplained disappearance a la "The Last Samurai" kind of thing. But that's not what I mean. I see no need for Garrett's end to be in any way dictated by the storyline. After all, it's a Milieu story. The City (the world and environment, the "atmosphere") is the true main character. That's what Thief absolutely can't be with out.
Thief 4 could easily pick up a completely new character with little or no mention of Garrett at all and still deliver the same sort of experience. I want Garrett to return as well, as I feel TDS didn't do him justice at all and I want to see him returned to favor before we let him down to fade away into our imaginations. But I would be far more comfortable with Garrett's end left to the minds of the fans.

I want Garrett to make his retirement theft, like the eye, but successful.
After all that saving the city, its time Garrett got his dues. They could mix t hat in with the girl as well.
Garrett Trains her as a keeper, meanwhile Garrett continues to steal things without telling her.
End cutscene of the game, Girl walks into Garrett's apartment to find it empty, with strong implication he's gone to live out his days on the beach

So mix between Option 2 and 4

As far as the three possible plots go :
I choose the second one (Garrett as the protagonist, the girl as a supporting character).
As far as Garrett's ultimate fate goes :
He decides to retire in style (but not immediately - maybe he should just mention the idea). He also starts giving the girl more difficult lessons of thievery, so she could once fully replace him.
Hm, and in case Viktoria would show up again for some reason :
The two are walking trough the streets at night to Garrett's appartment. The last shot shows their distant silhouttes. Garrett suddenly remarks : "You know, Vik... I think this is the beginning of a beatiful friendship..."
"Years later" card.
Somebody's knocking on the door. Viktoria opens. She hasn't aged much even after a few decades. The girl, now in her 30s, has come to visit Garrett. The old master thief finally decided to settle down about 10 years ago. He was quite happy with his retirement, though he was always eager to hear the girl talk about her newest succesful heists everytime she stopped by. But now, his health has been fading for several months. This time, it seems that death will be the final victor in theft, stealing his life. The girl and Viktoria quietly give farewell to Garrett. He pronounced his last words in an amused chuckle : "What the hell is a "taffer" anyway ?" His relieved hand slides down from the bed and touches his faithful blackjack on the carpet.
The girl left quietly. That night, while hanging out with her taffer pals, some of the greenhorn members of the band asked : "Is it true you knew Garrett, the fabled Master Thief ? What happened to him ? Did he die ? Or dissapear ?"
She smiled : "No, he's not dead. And even if he was, he'll live forever as a legend. But I believe he's still among us - doing what he always does... Thieving, making snarky remarks and... saving the City. Don't get me wrong - he never considered himself a hero...

...but maybe he's...

...a silent guardian...
...a watchful protector...
Start of grungy music outro
...THE DARK TAFFER..." :laff: :cheeky: :thumb:
Garrett swings on a rope downwards (like in the TDP cutscene). He hits the "camera" and everything goes black. The music slowly fades.
Some memorable shots of him and other characters from the series' cutscenes show up, interspersed with some of the iconic Thievy quotes. After them : Credits roll. ;)
So, my point is :
Old taffers never die. They just thieve away into the sunset... ;) :thumb:
Therefore, I voted "Something else" - namely, a combination of 2 and 4.

I think it would be most characteristic of Garrett to simply vanish without a trace. Forget the girl, forget retirement; Garrett never wanted to save the world, never wanted to be a Keeper, he was just looking for that one last ultimately lucrative job. Whatever plot EM comes up with for T4, unless they turn it into an FPS, you can bet that Garrett will end up in the thick of things whether he wants to or not. So I figure that after this last episode of saving the world, Garrett will have had enough.
And like the Thief he is ..... he'll just vanish into the night.
Works for me. ;)
P.S. Great storyline Petike! :thumb:

You talk about the legendary Thief Garret.
But it has always bugged me. Does anyone really know Garrett even exists? The cops only knew because Karres tipped them off through the hammers knowledge of him. But is he known to the general public?

Garret, by becoming THE ONE TRUE KEEPER, discovers that he is the reincarnation of the Builder who was also-» First keeper. He realises that the pagans were created by him in an ancient Keeper attempt to control or prevent technocracies and keep humanity free..., if pagans became dangerous, he also engineers an religion that could serve the same purpose and confront the pagans if necessary( very keeper like, taoist lol), so he creates the Builder, with mixed long term results... a glyph near the end in thief 4 reveals the truth to him. so tormented by his actions, he desperately tries to bring balance once more, defeating whatever villains they decide to create in thief 4. in the end he walks alone into the desert and is never seen again...............:D:p:laff:

Garrett continues his life as a thief.
