If there has to be an end, I'll prefer the 'disappear without a trace' option. Something like the ending of Bourne Ultimatum, where you know he's alive but that's about it. I think that would be the style that appeals most to me.
But I don't know if I would actually like it to end at all.

Garrett's story ended in T3.

How Garrett perishes?
He has a sudden heart attack while climbing a ladder.

Seeing as how the the City is full of needless drama, and too many people there know who he is anyway, I always thought it'd be cool if Garrett relocated somewhere else. Possibly the nation that the always-absent Baron was waging war with? In my opinion, the City is a place he can't stay in any longer. No one would know his identity, and he could just be himself...a thief, instead of a steampunk version of Neo. Hell, maybe the first couple of missions could revolve around him escaping the City (which judging by the game lore is no easy feat).
It may sound stupid, but I think it's the next logical course of evolution for the universe. This is, of course, provided that Garrett actually turns out to be the protagonist this round, and EM haven't planned something ridiculous, like a Final Fantasy/Thief crossover where Garrett rides a chocobo and has to fight Sephiroth...

:cheeky: I'm astounded by this:
In my threads about Garrett, there's always at least one taffer who's brain has only registered the Garrett's recent becoming and the visual, magical part of the glyphs and the keepers. Those do not see the philosophical, deeper "meaning" of the Keepers and Garrett's "changing" that has been slowly revealed through the entire series. Those who know what I'm talking about, include "Yarr" in your post. :p
Probably no-one knows what I'm talking about and I'm the only one that has found a more philosophical meaning to the end of TDS. If not even the writers of T3 would know what I'm talking about, they would have missed a clever twist and went for a more mainstream story.

Garret, by becoming THE ONE TRUE KEEPER, discovers that he is the reincarnation of the Builder who was also-» First keeper. He realises that the pagans were created by him in an ancient Keeper attempt to control or prevent technocracies and keep humanity free..., if pagans became dangerous, he also engineers an religion that could serve the same purpose and confront the pagans if necessary( very keeper like, taoist lol), so he creates the Builder, with mixed long term results... a glyph near the end in thief 4 reveals the truth to him. so tormented by his actions, he desperately tries to bring balance once more, defeating whatever villains they decide to create in thief 4. in the end he walks alone into the desert and is never seen again...............:D:p:laff:
this is the most twisted plot for thief 4 i've ever had the misfortune to read:wot:

Or while mantling up some broken stairs, or while jumping onto a rope that throws him to a wall in mach 3 speed. :D

I think it should end with something involving the kid. He might stay to his true thief-self, but he might just teach the girl something, maybe get her to be a keeper, thus ensuring the survival of the keeper order. And in the end Garrett just goes off somewhere, passing the "One true Keeper" mantle to the kid. :p
I dunno, they can think crap like this in at least 100 different ways, and maybe they will make a solid plot in the next game involving the girl. Because, let's face it. Ion storm just fucked the plot up in the last cutscene of TDS. They dug the grave for the rest of Thief games to come. :tsktsk:
Unless EM will make a retelling of the first games, they will be forced to make a story involving the girl, because the previous game had her. :erg:
But aside from that Garrett should never truly end in the games, but if I really have to choose - he should just dissappear somewhere, taffing his ass off.

I think the worst case would be something involving that girl. Anything involving her would be a emotion-based mainsteam storyline.
*cough T2X cough*

I don't think I ever had that. I think I did start bouncing uncontrollably between two platforms before expiring.

Yeah, that would be nice as well... :thumb:
The
Bourne series actually used something similar with its protagonist's story: A symbolic circle. When he first appears in
The Bourne Identity, he lies unconscious in the water. The ending of
Ultimatum has him in the same situation again...
