I like the "lean forward" movement. I played through T1, TG, T2 and never used it. It wasn't until I played a fan mission and asked how to get to a button on a desk that I found out about the "lean forward" movement. I think I could have played many mission in hundreds less hours if I had known about that move. It should be in T4.

forward and side-to-side... I don't play many first-person games besides Thief, but I always end up frustrated when I do because so many don't include those movements!

but I can't help but feel that having Garrett hide under beds would stump the AI.
There's no reason the AI can't be designed with this ability in mind, in fact it wouldn't be too difficult to get them to do things like pull Garret out from under the bed once discovered. Of course, any other game AI would be stumped, but Thief is already going to require sophistication above and beyond what other games' AI is capable of.

yeah, garret is no ninja, but i agree with a little sprint and speed. Roll? ok some higher jumps? ok ... just enough to make it believable, realistic. I mean in the first games, i had the idea that he was already agile, something about the way he just moved from place to place fluidly... I had that very thief like gameplay experience that i was becoming better , jumping in precise moments, walking on ledges, crouching and then falling silently made me feel more like a ninja than all prince of persia combined. the same is true to other mechanics like the bow and sword. You just got better. my first time in the lost city was terrifying, couple year later i felt i was not playing the same game. i had almost become garret... thats what they should aim in thief4.

Why should Garrett be so agile and frisky? For a start, he's not an athlete - he's a thief. He moves quietly, not quickly. Secondly, he's not exactly travelling light - he's wearing a bulky cloak, carrying a sword, a bow, a quiver with a variety of exotic and fragile arrows, an indeterminately large sack of loot, as well as whatever fun items he happens to have picked up during the course of his adventures. Thirdly, he seems to be the only person in the city to have mastered the intricacies of the ladder, so he's already leagues ahead ;)

I wouldn't like to see any sort of wall climbing at all, to be honest. It seems something too rushed to be put into a stealth game.
Getting technical about it, I don't like the idea of rolling, only because it would be disorienting in a dark environment. Beside that, though, it would be cool to crouch right before you hit the ground.
I'm just being picky, though.
Sprinting, I have to disagree with. It worked well for HL2, but, like others have said, it isn't the point of Thief. While playing Thief, I believe you shouldn't absolutely have to ghost every mission and sneak past every guard. It is, however, a stealth game, and being able to run away from fights just takes away the danger.
What happens when your sprint runs out? Either the guards catch you anyway or you end up getting away from every encounter entirely too easily.
Being able to move on ledges would be a plus, though. I can't think of any situation where that would unbalance the game.
As for the other things, I feel those did very well in games like Assassin's Creed and Mirror's Edge, but that was for those games. In Assassin's Creed, there was stealth, but not hide-in-the-shadows stealth like Thief. As for Mirror's Edge, well... I suppose that's why I enjoyed it but was done after playing.

I think TMA had all the necessary movements down well enough. I wish there was a sprint option, but I think that such a thing does not fit in well since it would be noisy and, as mentioned before, the equipment and loot would weigh the player down too much.
