I don't *think* it even mentioned his parents. But there was an impression that he'd been on his own for awhile.

To me, Garrett's always been an orphan on his own in the streets of the City. I think growing up in a hostile city, knowing your parents abandoned you, and without any real relationships could easily lead to Garrett's independent, cynical attitude. This would make Artemus the first person he formed a connection with, which would make sense as to why Artemus is the only person Garrett listens to in the entire series (apart from, arguably, Viktoria.)
I like this explaination. Makes a lot of sense. Although, if he was too young and doesn't remember them, he probably doesn't KNOW they abandoned him. He might think they did, or feel they did, but depending on how old he was, he may not remember to know for sure. But yeah, there could still be that sense of abandonment, whether founded or not that would feed the rest. :) I like that reasoning.

The Thief games are like a Hollywood set - a lot of facing but not much behind them.
Heh I think thats a good part of whats so appealing about the whole thing though. Instead of playing a rock solid, fully developed character. . .you've got a basic sketch and there's so much open space the player is free to build it up themselves. So - for some of us anyway - you end up playing a character thats all your own, in a world that - while not yours, is open to expansion and filling out in your own mind.
I don't know. I rather like how open it is, and how it lets me take the idea and run with it. I think thats one reason those fan missions that take it the wrong way bug me. It does not fit with 'my' version of what I've created on this.

I agree. Most of us have some little backstory involving Garrett's past running around in our heads. Since there is no actual life-history provided for Garrett in any of the games, that makes it open to everyone's own interpretation and imagination. Whatever trips your trigger (or bowstring, as the case may be) ;) .

Didn't the very first movie in Thief have Garrett saying he doesn't remember his parents at all?
"I was a kid. No parents, no home."
