Well, we know he stole his boots for T1/2 (Gamespy interview). However, I think these leather vambraces are one of the terrible fantasy self-runners. Honestly I liked the original Thief-1-look most of all because there was a slight chance that this costume could have been based on a tunic and real clothes... not like this super agent leather straps thing. Oh, and I don't like black clothes either, that's so boring.
