General Inadequecies (aka. I Suck) - by Stainboy

Those Fire Atronarchs really suck don't they? I was doing fairly well in Kvatch up until they showed up.
I found the Main Quest, at least the early part that I've played, has this feeling of immediacy.
*** Minor Early MQ Spoilers ***
In Kvatch the citizens are trapped and you must save them before the Daedra get through and kill them! Then you have to liberate the Castle and save the Count! Hurry!! Then you have to spirit Martin away and be FAST about it because assassins are SNEAKING UP ON HIM RIGHT NOW!!!! And don't get me started on how many people are dying EVERY DAY those Oblivion gates remain open.
Bullshit.
I did finish Kvatch, barely, at level 3 but I decided Martin and his assassins can just wait. I'm taking a few months off to build my character, accumulate some gold, join a guild or two, wander the woods searching for ingredients (a remarkably enjoyable little activity), find a few enchanted items, buy a house. Then I'll go introduce myself to Martin when I'm good and ready.
It's kind of weird playing that way. In the back of my head there's a nagging urgency that the assassins will find him while I'm goofing off. It spoils the fun just a little.
It really helps to have plenty of enchanted weapons ready. A Frost Sword for the Fire Atronarchs kills them good. Shock for the other Daedra, Fire for the undead, poisons for the Trolls. Once you have a creature-specific arsenal always ready the game isn't so insanely difficult.

Being a dark elf sure pays of when visiting the warm planes of oblivion. (75% Fire resistance for the win!) And i got a ring with 15% fire and frost to throw onto that.
Feels good to laugh in the face of all those fire throwing bastards. Have at thee!:ebil:

I have yet to bother with Kvartch, just took the horse from the priory and rode into the sunset, my trusty blade on my back looking to right the wrongs of the world for the commoners. Now I'm a lowly member of the fighters' guild - a journeyman.

sup
Yeah, it's really quite easy (or at least, the right balance) as far as I can see

Ha! Characters born under the sign of the Atronarch have them beat by a mile. We absorb 50% of every magical assault wielded against us. So not just Fire blasts, but Shock and Frost blasts too. We can't regenerate our Magicka like everybody else but it turns out that's not as painful as it seems. There are LOTS of sources of free Magicka out there for the taking. Not to mention the basic Restore Magicka potion is probably one of the easiest to make in the game. I've brewed up almost a hundred of the things and I rarely use them.
Couple that with my character's Breton ancestry with their natural resistance to Magicka and I'm practically immune to any spell caster. Breton + Atronarch = Unbeatable Combination.
I love to go hunting for Imps, annoy them until they start firing off their puny Fire, Shock, and Frost bolts then just stand there smiling, soaking it all in. The half that make it through to me only do a tiny bit of damage and anyway and by the time they become a nuisance I'm all recharged.

Im around level 20. I find that NPCs are dying as much as I am . I am finding them on the road, dead. Especially near water (will o' the wisps?)
I am thinking about asking Bethesda for a new F9 key. Between combat and lockpicking (which still caries less than half a second for a response even at level 48) I have been wearing my reload key OUT.
Some places are easy and others are very difficult. I find that to fight many creatures, I have to stand up and run backwards while firing about 30 arrows into them and hope that only one creature is arround. this is of course with a mid 40's skill in marksman. Other areas (mostly dungeons) are really easy thanks to sneaking.
I have come accross a few creatures that can see me sneaking (level 80+ sneak) from over 50 feet away and start charging before I can line up a bow shot, completing taking away my 3X damage.
Its tons o' fun and I can't quit playing it, but there are some frustration points. I am going to try my hardest to beat the game as it shipped and then tweak and mod on my second go around.

Ha ha, LOL! That sounds sooo familiar. We've all been there I think.
And then when you've finally killed them you realize you've ended up back where you started. So off you go again only to lather rinse and repeat once more.

I find the game's difficulty just right on default. Of course, I'm also smart enough not to level my non-combat skills too fast too. :p It took me a while to realize you have to acually dodge in this game insted of relying on your armor rating. Make the best use of your skills, and always go out prepared is all the advice I can offer. And always bring a spare weapon because you never know who will jump out at you with a Disintigrate Weapon enchantment. Haha, good times...

Add a 20% Absorb amulet (a nice find) and a 10% Absorb ring (a nice sigil) and you're cruising against most casters. Still looking for 2 more 10% Sigils though :p

Dodge, pah! just stand there and take it like a .... (Imperial, dark elf, nord etc delete as appropriate). There's no creature out there strong enough to face the might of my blade. Come test my skill varlets.
This knight character seems to be bleeding through into the real world.

Generally speaking, I assume the developers were smart enough to properly balance their game before release.
As Oblivion shows, this isn't always the case.
