the angry young gangsta mentality that brought him to his fate
Er....the what now?
I was more or less in tacit agreement with the thrust of your post until that little hiccup. Isn't calling him an angry young gangsta kind of projecting the very same media bias onto him that you've just mentioned? It's just as easy to casually say "the gung ho, trigger happy mentality that caused Zimmerman to murder Martin", as if just saying it makes it true.

Don't forget, you have to hold them sideways.

:D
That one particular image stereotype is estimated to have saved a ton of lives, since you can't hit shit when you fire a gun held sideways.
I think that's awesome.

He called himself a gangsta in his texts.

And thus was definitely involved in criminal activity on the day he was shot?

Just because you call yourself one doesn't mean you're actually one. Thanks to hip hop and Hollywood gang culture has been glorified and there's a lot of wannabes out there of all races flashing gang symbols but have never actually been in one.

Is this kind of paranoia common in the US?
That sort of paranoia is common here among everybody always about everything. The 80's were a good time. Stranger Danger. Say No To Drugs. I'm surprised we managed to get past the whole "Dungeons And Dragons Makes Kids Kill Themselves" thing.
I live about 10 miles outside of Pittsburgh, and I'm constantly trying to get people who live even closer to the city than I do to get food/drinks sometime. And it's hilarious how the reactions are basically "OMG BLACK PEOPLE" and "OMG I'LL NEED TO TAKE MY GUN" and whatever, when Pittsburgh is probably one of the safest 10 cities on the planet (and, er, also one of the oldest/whitest). I mean, I moved directly from a town with 1,000 people to one of the crappier areas in the city to live by myself when I was 19 and it wasn't a big deal. People are basically raised to be afraid of everything now (by "now" I mean, since the 70's), it's fucked up.
