I want a Karrasbot in my house. I mean, who doesn't, right?
Soooo... I'm gonna have a crack at making one out of paper or cardboard with those papercraft templates that are so popular on the interwebs these days. First I need to design the template though, and to do that I need to rip the models out of Thief II. Presumably in the form of some sort of file. I may have to re-pose them in Maya or something too, I dunno.
I COULD spend forever screwing around online trying to figure out how to do that, and downloading programs to extract files and so on. Or I could just check here because I'm pretty sure some of you nerds would have done it already for various reasons. I checked on The Circle and didn't find any model resources, but that doesn't mean they don't exist.
So if anyone either has the existing model files, or knows where to download them, or can tell me how to rip them easily (yeah, I'm REALLY techno-retarded), I'd be super grateful for their assistance and promise to post the templates here when I'm done. They'll probably just be little, but if I can somehow neaten up the textures you should be able to scale the little one at least to life-size.
Sorry to ask about something that seems so boring and simple, but I'm really hopeless at this sorta shit. :( And the design process is gonna be enough of a pain in my ass as it is.

Hi, Corridor.
You can find some of the AI mesh files (models) extracted and converted to .3ds on (
http://www.angelfire.com/games4/shadowspawn/Thief%20AI.html) http://www.angelfire.com/games4/shadowspawn/Thief%20AI.html. (The files you want are called Robot
XXX.3ds, depending on what kind of bot you want.)
To get the textures, open mesh.crf (.crf is just a renamed .zip) and extract the right .gif-texture from the folder txt16.
Mesh.crf should be found in your thief2-directory, thief2/crfs or thief2/res.
Good luck. ;)
Btw, I did also make a model of the average thief-face out of paper some months ago.

Ha ha, you framed and mounted it? That's pretty damn dorky! :)
Awesome, thanks a ton. Hopefully this should be exactly what I need. I knew someone here would come through for me.

Hey Corridor,
If you get anywhere with this I'd love to have\see a copy of the plans.
Thanks

Goddammit, I posted a reply like three hours ago, what happened to it?
Okay, well let's try again.

No problemo, if I make anything remotely buildable you'll be the first to know. Mostly because you guys are the only people I can think of would be halfway interested, and I'd be embarrassed to have gone to all that nerdy trouble just for my own personal use.
How cool would it be, an army of Karrasbots in homes across the world, freaking out cats and visitors.
seventyfour: Thanks a ton for those meshes, I opened them in Pepakura Designer and they all look fine. Didn't try the textures, since they're all labelled differently and I couldn't be bothered matching them up just yet, but I assume they work with it fine as well. These will be perfect for me to start with.
Sadly, the meshes look like they'll need a lot of cleaning up (weird floating crap everywhere, one bot missing a leg), and I can't edit shapes at all in PD, so I'm gonna have to get me some kinda 3D editing program. I was planning on grabbing a trial of 3D Max and fixing this stuff within the 30 days, but if you happen to know of a smaller or more user-friendly program that would just perform basic operations, I'd be even more indebted to ya.
Also would you mind telling me, if you know, why two of the robo meshes seem to be the same but with one missing its eye parts?
(goes back to crafting Bosch figures)

Don't thank me, thank Shadowspawn, he's the one who converted and uploaded them.
The weird floating planes and boxes are used by Thief to show where all the limbs and joints are. They are placed in separate "sub-models" (groups), so they should be pretty easy to remove in a decent 3D editing program. I would recommend (
http://www.anim8or.com/) Anim8tor, a pretty popular (at least on this forum) and simple program; or (
http://www.blender.org/) Blender, a more advanced and powerful alternative. Both are free.

Or (

Edit: I've just been experimenting and you can edit these in Sketch Up
Import, then explode the whole entity and then explode the individual entities created, then edit away.
I've just started messing so I might be wrong and haven't tried exporting or saving yet.
Edit: Scratch that, can't export as 3ds in free version.(obviously) (but Pepakura will read kmz files, so may be all we need)
Edit: Found (
http://sketchuptips.blogspot.com/2007/08/plugin-unfoldrb.html) Unfold plugin for Sketch Up. Looks promising.
Don't have time tonight to mess about properly but seems to work.

Well I didn't know that :(
Thanks for suggestions, hope to come up with something soon.
