Hej there. I recently finally bought the whole thief series after having played the old demos again and now I'm struggling through thief 1 (unfortunately not the gold version).
So this might look like a thread for the other thief forum but I am quite arachnophobic and those HUGE beasts are really spoiling down my fun here. So I was assuming I'd just got to find a way of living with it but yesternight I saw a thread on strangebedfellows.de for a system shock 2 mod which makes the spiders disappear for the cowardly arachnophobiacs like myself (although I think the ones in Shock 2 were half as bad).
SO, the question is: Is there something similar available for Thief? Or maybe just a mod that turns them into something else, less huge spidery? Maybe snakes or big rats or something like that perhaps.
While I still enjoy the level designs and especially the awesome oldschool zombies the huge spiders are like someone spitting in an else perfectly tasty soup, if you know what I mean. I just can't really enjoy the levels with those beasts loitering around any corner and in the earth pits under the houses of the haunted cathedral in which I am jumping to escape those other beasts.
Don't get me wrong, I don't mind the smaller yellowish spiders at all. But (

Garrett should be equipped with a giant fly swatter just for these occasions.

I hate spiders too, but I'd never take them out.
I don't know if there is a spider removal mod for Thief. I thought there was but you reminded me SS2 has one so I might have confused it with that.
Tip: Don't ever play Arx or Dark Messiah if you hate big spiders. Or The Inverted Manse FM.

Only thing to do, get use to them. Over time, you will. I don't like the big ones either. I'm used to them. Be quiet, be stealthy, stay in the shadows. Sometimes, one well placed broad head arrow will take them out. See them before they see you. You'll be better off.

Don't ever watch "Wild Wild West", starring Will Smith, either.

Erm well I'm not THAT arachnophobiac. I was just thinking that there's a spider-ex mod for thief available as well after having seen the entry for the respective Shock 2 mod.

I read about using games with spiders for treating arachnophobia a few times, can't you just do the same? :p

Gosh! Lots of helpful posts. :laff: :laff:
I'm the same Outrider but BA is right. You do get used to them. If they don't know you're there and most missions are quite helpful like that, then a broadhead will take them out. And such a nice large target! Doesn't make it better but it makes them handleable (?)
And really, having had rats living downstairs for a while, and then meeting those pesky snakes in Pirates Ahoy, I think I prefer these critters anyway. At least they stay fairly still.

I think a similar patch for removing the spiders from the Thief OMs would be pretty easy to put together, but it wouldn't work on any FM that used a custom gamesys. You could also open the mis files one by one and manually delete the spiders. There's also Schwaa's ants and beetles, which replace the spiders, but those are not designed to be dropped into the OMs. You'd have to edit either the mis or gam in that case too.
On the other hand, I tend to agree with the crowd that says just deal with it, but then again spiders really don't bother me, so my opinion doesn't really count.

I am mildly arachnophobic, I believe. I can handle the things in a game, I love the movie Arachnophobia, and the bigger they are the less they freak me out.
But I absolutely cannot stand the little ones in reality. I was down in the cellar laying some glue traps (we have a snake in the cellar) the other day and walked into a corner that we don't visit often (if ever) and was covered in stray strands of spidersilk. I freaked out. No spiders were to be seen, but I basically screamed IT'S IN MY HAIR IT'S IN MY HAIR for 5 minutes.
The spiders in Thief creep me out by the noises they make- they're so utterly alien. But it's as it's been said before- you'll just have to get used to them. They're not so bad, as video game spiders go. And in fact, once you get used to using the bow it's great satisfaction to nail one with a broadhead from a distance and listen to it scream.

"Getting used to it" doesn't work for everyone. Each spider-infested OM and especially some of the FMs made me more and more arachnophobic.
So where's this mod for SS2? It's essentially the same engine so a similar mod should be doable for Thief.
Currently I'm using a very crude mod, which replaces the spider models with some guard model. The result is either no spider, invisible spider or rotated and somewhat daliesque guard model.
