So now that we're successfully homeschooling the kids (whateverthehell that means) and my wife has nearly 2 years of nursing experience under her belt, we're going on the road. She signed with a travel nursing company two weeks ago, and she's due to start a 13 week contract in Hershey, PA on Feb 20th. The company provides a furnished apartment/condo for the duration, plus various stipends, so we're increasing our income substantially. Best of all, we get to pick where we go (we said no to Honolulu, Portland, and New York since we wanted a smaller town for our first time out). Being in Penn will put us relatively close to my doc in Boston, and we'll get to see all kinds of things in New England since it's so centrally located.
The challenge is figuring out how to get our clothes, cookware, school supplies, entertainment, toys, etc. into the 4x4x4 space in the back of the van. We've been plotting this for awhile and it's going to work, though we'll be pretty tight on the drive between contracts. It's an effort to bank some money, simplify our lives, stay mobile until something happens one way or another with my health, and see the country on 80% of someone else's dime. Also, we hopefully get to meet some fellow Taffers/TTLGers out there in the wide world.
More details on (

Man, you should have gone with Portland - it's awesome and in many ways FEELS like a small town. Still, I understand the desire for Hershey, particularly with the Boston doc. This sounds so exciting!

Hershey might be a bit touristy but since you are kind of a tourist and it's not a long gig, it shouldn't bother you. That entire area is gorgeous though. I almost moved nearby to Elizabethtown. I think you'll definitely enjoy it.
And being closer to Boston is in no way a bad thing.

Oh - one more thing. Because my wife specializes in cardiology, she usually works block shifts - 3 12hr shifts, 4 days off. That means lots of little mini-vacations to Canada, Philly, D.C., Boston, and NYC (I'M COMING FOR YOU RUG BURN, YOU SON A BITCH).

So you're moving to Hershey? Hell yeah! See if you can get me a giant Hershey's bar then. Those big ole bastards that are like 10 pounds of pure chocolate. I've always wanted to know if I could eat one in a single sitting.

Cardiology and Hershey actually go together quite nicely ;)
Enjoy your stay...I've never been to Hershey but I've heard that it's a good area of PA

Interesting... 13 weeks isn't long at all. But you have a point, it might be a little adventure to see so much of the country like that, and not just driving through but really living in different places ... And places you wouldn't otherwise ever get a chance to know. And you're even getting paid for it. Pretty cool actually.
Good luck.
