I'm on my first run through the cradle and i've broken into all of the white room cells and found key items dear to the inmates. The items have this green glow about them and occationally shine as if i'm supposed to be able to pick them up. With that my guess is i'm supposed to do with them as the inmates had, i.e take the baby's urn for a walk. Only problem is I can't seem to pick them up no matter what I do. Is this even what i'm supposed to do to continue or is there something else i'm supposed to do? Thanks in advance.

Unless I am mistaken, and I may be, you can only pickup one at a time. If you "blow" the "use" of one, you can go get another to try again.

I thought you could have more than one when you get to that point but could only use one at a time.

My objective is to find information on the hag. I've been just about everywhere and read all the papers I could find. I lingered around the white room and the hall of records trying to find similarties between the hag and one (or more) of the inmates, my initial theory being that the hag was infact one of the inmates to begin with.
From what I could gather from the conversation I think I might have an idea as to waht to do. Thanks again.
EDIT: Alas my theory didn't work out. I figured i'd go from 1 to 9 accomplishing what the inmates did with their items but I couldn't pick up the mask. Then I tried to go from 9 to 1 but I couldn't get the tinder box, I even tried starting a fire but it didn't work. I get the feeling i'm missing some important piece of information or i'm trying to do something out of order. Am I not supposed to do this puzzle now? I'm looking for information on the hag after all and I see no way how any of this could be related to the hag.

Look for it where you found the diary.
You must have missed Lauryl telling you that you need to go from present to past. Both to get information and finally to get out of the Cradle.
As a hint, take a good look at the "cage" in the dining room. Think about what patient was allowed to do what and integrate what they were allowed with thier toys and where they might possibly have done it.
Remember the "cage" in the basement.
