Just curious if any of you who enjoy ghosting (or some rough equivalent) ever combine it with a "no reloads" rule. My thinking is, it takes away a good deal of the fun & tension knowing I can just reload if I mess up. If I get busted, I make a note of it, but just play through with the consequences. Of course the goal is to limit the number of times you get busted, meaning sometimes you need to whip out the ol' blackjack/flashbomb combo when things go wrong to avoid alerting the whole level.
Playing with no reloads is rather severe, so I go lighter on the ghost rules. For me (playing on Expert):
-2nd level alerts are allowed, but 3rd-level alerts (AI actually sees you & chases you) are a bust
-use of equipment is allowed, but kept to absolute minimum. I keep track of every item used, but it's better to sling a few moss or water arrows than get caught
-KOs are noted; again, it's bad to have to KO, but better than getting caught if there's no way around it (i.e. those 2 women in the apartment in Life of the Party that you just can't sneak by).
It's a fun way for me to play, anyway. Tonight I went through The Sword like this; never was "caught" (had a few 2nd-level alerts), and only used 1 water arrow, with no reloads. Anyone else do anything similar? Any ghosting stories out there?

i'm a pansy. the way i do it, i save before any major, risky undertaking, or anything that might involves a lot of acrobatics, like ropes, since the damn things are so buggy. i also save before i do anything that might make a lot of noise. when i'm in undead levels i don't particularly care about getting busted by zombies, since zombies are stupid, and i will often confront them to get them out of my way, especially if they're in an area i intend to go through a lot. equally, apparitions i usually destroy outright. haunts i treat a little differently: in an area with a lot of haunts i revert to stealthyness, trying to get a chance to sneak up on them and backstab them. i do this for other undead, of course, to make fighting them easier, but i'm less worried about getting busted by them than i am with haunts.
i think next playthough, i'm going to try to save less. add a little spice.

I usually play in the Ghost/Ironman style. Ghost as much as I can but use tulz and wack heads when I have to. (read: F up:cheeky: )

Nobody conscious. Then what am I doing in a ghosting thread is beyond me.
Lets just say I ghost before I knock them out.

dethtoll - well, I certainly save before taking certain actions involving rope arrows, for example. You'd have to be crazy not to save right before roping up the fire tower in Lost City, for example. Also, sometimes SHAS or something similar can put a real damper on your day with this method. I was about 45 minutes into a mission the other day, had done it perfectly, used no equipment, alerted no one, when I crouched to enter a stream, got stuck for a second, and then yelled out and died. No saves. VERY frustrating. So there's always that danger. But definitely give it a try.
I'd particularly recommend this method in an undead-filled mission like Bonehoard, because it forces you to slow down even more and notice the architecture and design. Before ghosting, Bonehoard was probably my least favorite mission, I think because it was so easy to just run by the zombies if you didn't want to deal with them, and that didn't feel "thiefy". Now I look forward to it because it's a decent challenge. Plus the no-reloads rule makes those jumping puzzles considerably more tense!

I've always played Thief trilogy without saving the game, only when I have to stop it for some reason. It does add more tension. I also try to not leave any signs of my passage, torches & doors included. As a matter of fact I play every game that way, but Thief rules, expecially with the extreme difficulty mod (Which I shut off for two first T2 missions though, but only because it breaks those levels).

(I've tried searching -- please excuse me if this has been answered already, but I could not find such an answer)Is there a list somewhere of which of the "original" levels for Thief 1, 2, and 3 can be ghosted? If possible, with note of the highest difficulty for which ghosting is possible?
I am more interested in the "no reload" style than official ghosting as defined (
http://forums.eidosgames.com/showthread.php?t=30310) here. If someone has a list for this style it would also interest me.
Similarly, I have found a "ghosting Fan Mission" thread but no summary.

Take a look at (
http://home.online.no/~ajnilsen/hn/hn.htm) Klatremus' Supreme Ghosting Site. He has walkthroughs for T1 & T2 with notation as to what degree of ghosting is possible. I think you will like this site.
NotMe on 30/7/2008 at 15:56
That site says all Thief 1 original missions except for "The Haunted Cathedral" and "Into the Maw of Chaos" can be ghosted on expert.
It does not say if these two can be ghosted on a lower difficulty level.
Where do I find it's Thief 2 information? The menu appears to only have Thief 1 and 2X!

I'm sorry. My mistake, the walkthroughs are for T2X.
You might want to go to (
http://forums.eidosgames.com/forumdisplay.php?f=7) Eidos' forums. They have an extensive ghost section for FMs. If you ask over there, Peter or someone may have the answer.
