Check this Eidos thread. (
http://forums.eidosgames.com/showthread.php?t=47700) FMs - Ghost/Perfect Thief Results (Part 6) That will have pages of ghosting threads for the FM's. In detailed explanations. I haven't looked in the archived section on the forum, there may be something there as well. This is at least a start, those threads date back to 2005. There is a LOT to read. Have fun!

The "official" ghosting rules call for only Expert difficulty. So if your iron man rules are building on that, the difficulty question is moot. You should post this question over at Eidos like BA said, and wait for Peter Smith to respond. He, Dafydd and some of the newer ghosters like klatremus and goldsla will be happy to answer.

i'm a pansy. the way i do it, i save before any major, risky undertaking, or anything that might involves a lot of acrobatics, like ropes, since the damn things are so buggy. i also save before i do anything that might make a lot of noise. when i'm in undead levels i don't particularly care about getting busted by zombies, since zombies are stupid, and i will often confront them to get them out of my way, especially if they're in an area i intend to go through a lot. equally, apparitions i usually destroy outright. haunts i treat a little differently: in an area with a lot of haunts i revert to stealthyness, trying to get a chance to sneak up on them and backstab them. i do this for other undead, of course, to make fighting them easier, but i'm less worried about getting busted by them than i am with haunts.
i think next playthough, i'm going to try to save less. add a little spice.
I have pretty much the same Thief style as you.
Ghosting is just way too difficult. I usually don't bother stealthing zombies either, nothing a few fire arrows, mines, holy water can't take care of.
I always try and get no alerts and no damage, I can't help it I'm just very cautious in stealth games:cool:

I always begin a level and try to ghost it, but usually I end up frustrated by a damn guard that just can't be sneaked by unless I use water arrows or put him in a nice coma (oh and I love making strange things to them when their "sleeping" - like throwing them in water, or setting them on fire, or throw them down a flight of stairs, or throw them off a balcony, or anything else since I somehow start to hate that person :sly: ). undead, I never really was fond of them, but I ghost them when I have the chance. I hate the fact that they breath so heavy I can't even hear myself thinking, let alone hear other enemies closing on my location. The no saving rule, I can't apply. There are too many things that can go wrong and I'm talking about game crashes that can randomly appear (especially in TDS) or accidentaly falling from somewhere (because the mission is too damn dark to see your own lockpicks in front of you).

Water and moss arrows are allowed under ghosting rules.

not under my ghosting rules ;) I try to interact with the game world as little as possible (of course, interact with valuables as much as I can :) )

Anybody try total ghosting (not even water/moss; good luck crossing that metal bridge) and ignoring all loot? I know that most expert levels have loot requirements, but you could complete all others then level skip since you did what you came to do.
It makes it harder to not have health potions or any other equipment that you could otherwise use.

I haven't had a crash in Thief I as long as i've played it these past few days and newer a Thief II crash (nor now, nor years ago) atleast to my remembering.
For Dark Holes Brightness (+) increasing is the answer usually.
I've opened my eyes again. Till now i quicksaved at nearly every action i took... time to change that... well... maybe still bonehoard, although i'm not sure i'll ever finish it. Anyhow so i usually end up blackjacking all and used no water/moss arrows (never really used mosses anyway) and if no zombies - no other/holy water arrows.
Basically the main and best weapon of the game is blackjack.
Edit: wow i've read those eidos forum ghosting rules... some hell of a rules. Too bad it's impossible to do it on all campaign missions and i don't know the right fan missions, to do ghosting on? any help?

I was refering to TDS about the crashes. I haven't played T1 but in T2 allthough there are no crashes there are certain points where you just die all of a sudden for no apparent reason.

That's an engine "feature" known as SHAS (Sudden Heart Attack Syndrome). It's more common in T1 than T2 I believe.
