It makes some of those 'rules' niothing but pointless compulsive disorders, carried out by the sort of people who like to play with their eyes closed and one hand tied behind their back
Oh like you're one to talk, Mr. "I want to play with one health point and no equipment".

That's good old fashioned arrogance though, not a mental disorder.

Secondly, what about the security face at the start of the last mission in Thief 2? It's possible to dash to cover and avoid it going red but it will always go yellow. Is this also covered under "if the mission requires it"?
Buy an invisibility potion, it won't go red (Karras still speaks to you though).

Snapdragon, don't be scared. Ghosting can be a hell of a lot of fun. Make your own ghosting rules. My feeling is that if you bought the game, you can play it however you like. My version of ghosting is not alerting and not hurting / knocking anybody. (Of course, I kill spiders. That's how I roll.) I usually start off ghosting and if I get the sense I'm in for massive complications -- like in The Den -- I'll start knocking people out.
I think the best experience is ghosting a mission you're playing for the first time. Some fan missions are better for this than others: Saturio Returns Home is a good one for starters, and Forbidden Rites too.

Rats are excluded due to their lack of reaction to Garrett.
This isn't true. A rat by default has a different team than Garrett, and will go to alert 3 when seeing Garrett. If the flee point is placed low enough as some FM's have them, the rat will flee. The difference with rats and other AI is they will not "Inform" other AI's of seeing Garrett or Garrett's location.

A RAT saw me!! H'oh well, back to square one!!

*giggles at the idea of resetting because you were seen by a rat* I didn't even realize that the rats went to alert. But then. . .they really don't have much to say, so maybe I didn't notice. I DID notice they squeak louder when you stand on them, though.
I have to agree, though, about making your own rules to ghost. Its not like anyone else can *REALLY* tell you how to play a game in your own time, on your own computer. If you feel it would be fun and an interesting challenge, go for it.
I tend to play with a 'story' in the back of my head. The idea of what people will do when they wake up, etc. If I'm 'ghosting', to me, I sneak around and don't alert the AI. This only includes AI that will search for you or alert others. (IE, friendly ai, I don't bother. If you can go into a tavern and people are on friendly terms there's no point in ghosting.) But in the normal areas where you have to sneak anyway, my ghosting is no Ai goes past the 'huh? what was that noise? oh, ust have been nothing' alert mode. No one's killed, no one's knocked out.
Then for my own satisfaction, I do like to put keys back - or put them where the people could find them and think they were misplaced. Doors are closed behind me and basically no mess left behind. And in those areas where you *HAVE* to knock someone out - I like to put them in a place where when they wake up, they can think they just fell asleep or hit their head. :D Silly, specially when you can't atually prop them in a chair or something, but it keeps me amused.
The only places I generally don't bother. . .is those places where you can't seem to sneak by no matter what you do. Namely fan missions with tile floor and AI thats too sensitive. :P Those ones where you creep a half a step and they go into full alert mode. Grrr.

The master of ghosting should post to this thread, his name is Sneak.

Wasn't it stated that to get the gold icon on the upper levels of Cragscleft (you know the one, it's on the table with the Inquisitor and his novice facing it), you would need to leave your game on overnight and then the two just might walk away for whatever reason?
BrokenArts on 31/1/2007 at 19:01
I am not sure who first did that. I know Sneak did, and Sneak also left the game running over night dealing with the Golden Child in T2 Life of the Party. I remember seeing screen shots from that, wonder if he still has them.
Hmm, may have to poke him about this. Been awhile since this has come up. OK, I poked him, lets see what happens.
