I remember reading a review of a rockclimbing game in PC GAMER UK, back in the 90's, and the reviewer panned it for being a bad rockclimbing game. Since I read that review I've often pondered if it would be possible to make a
good rockclimbing game somehow. I've never climbed rocks myself but I imagine that it takes a good bit of planning combined with quick reflexes. In other words just the kinda thing that would make for a kick-ass videogame. But how do you translate the experience to something which can be performed using only a keyboard? For the longest time, noone knew. But then, one fateful day, one man had a clever idea for how it could be done! And the result is a free flashgame called (
http://www.foddy.net/GIRP.html) GIRP. Play it!
If you're having trouble, here are some pointers, but please refrain from reading these if you wanna figure out the finer points of rockclimbing for youself:
-hold down a key until the dude grabs on to the ring, do not let go of the button until you've gripped another ring. Letting go of one ring before you've managed to grab another one is for PRO-CLIMBERS only. Newbies are advised not to try this technique.
-for more upward thrust, begin reaching for the ring just as you flex your muscles. Do not reach for the ring and then flex, but rather try to do it at the same time.
-remember that flexing muscles also shortens your reach. Sometimes you'll want to just tap the flex muscle key to gain momentum instead of holding it down.
-you can use both CTRL and the mousebutton to flex muscles. Personally I prefered using the mouse. This is not a game that everyone will enjoy. It's a niche-game if ever there was one but personally I
love it and I hope some of you will as well. :)
Personal Best: 36,4 meters. Beat
that, suckaz!

This is the worst typing tutor I've ever played.
(and at least QWOP was named for the keys you used. This one should be called ALPHABET DEATH or something.)

Okay I just played it for 15 seconds, and yeah, this is awesome. I don't think I could've thought of a better way to simulate rock climbing with just a keyboard.

Even if people don't like it, they have to admit it's a pretty novel game concept.
Also as weird as the input maybe, the game does replicate the wall climbing feel some, even started pressing harder and harder on the keys .. just .. to .. reach .. next .. handle .. .. #$%#$#!!.
The water, however, does seem a bit like a superfluous punishment just before the end. It seriously hampers gaining momentum just when you really need it to survive.

Is there any way to grab the same rock with both hands? I find myself wanting to switch hands pretty often.

No sadly (as far as I can tell), nor other climbing tricks like letting go as you catapult yourself upward to grab somewhere higher. There appears to be some arbitrary division as to which hand can grab which letters as well, which is annoying.
But, never mind you can't use your feet either. It's not a sim, I guess. Frankly I don't think using the mouse is right. You should all be forced to play horrid/hilarious keyboard Twister. (I reckon they could add the use of feet in the next version fairly easily, with even more absurd QWOPish results)
