Things have really picked up in recent times with the newer Glide Wrappers. First there was OpenGlide and Glidos, then came Zeckensack's wrapper, and now there's dgVoodoo as well.
The latter is said to run Red Baron 3D even better than the OpenGlide solution, but its major selling point is that it provides DOS compatibility as well, making it a free alternative to (the reputedly excellent) Glidos. I'm going to install Redguard later and see how it goes.
And IIRC I read that the current version of Zeckensack's wrapper runs I-War / Defiance pretty much perfectly!
edit: 26/11/2010:
There's a (relative) newcomer on the block called nGlide, which takes the curious approach of converting to Direct3D rather than OpenGL (curious because, IIRC, Glide is more or less a sub-set of OpenGL, and hence the translation is FAR more direct (ahem) for that target API). This may potentially make for a more compatible solution on video hardware with poor OpenGL support, however.
edit: 9/3/2013:
There's a new dgVoodoo 2 on the scene. nGlide is very stable nowadays. Added the Diablo 2 wrapper mentioned by EvaUnit02 to this post.

Does dgVoodoo run Redguard better than Glidos? I ask this because this is the only game that I want to play. I still don't like glidos's payment setup or the thought of paying at all for just a glide wrapper. A free wrapper that does the same job definately peaks my interest so any info you can provide would be much appreciated, thanks.
Great post by the way, just what the docter ordered... more classic goodness. :thumb:

I whole-heartedly concur. Any word on how well they work with Descent: Freespace? (lolo so not Descent)

Well Redguard runs beautifully under dgVoodoo on my GeForce 4 Ti4200.
Sometimes.
I haven't figured it out... the time I got it going, the Glide version was wonderfully smooth. But I had no sound (I'm not sure whether that could be anything to do with dgVoodoo though). The installer had sound, but I couldn't get sound in the game. I saw a few references to such problems online, but haven't investigated it enough... maybe vogons will tell me what's going on.
Sometimes the game just doesn't run, however, and I'm left with a blank screen. I was playing without sound last night, but couldn't manage to get it going this morning. No idea why.
So. YMMV, but yes, dgVoodoo is capable of running Redguard very nicely indeed :)
I'm running Win98SE, btw. I think I read that sound problems can be fixed with VDMSound on XP.
Good luck!

I've been using Zeckensack's wrapper to play I-War and Longbow 2 for a while now, it works beautifully. The best thing is that it has the ability to play glide games at higher resolution - so I play Longbow 2 at 1280x960!

Why would you want to play Freespace with a glide wrapper? The game does support other graphic accelerators than voodoo.

As ivocha already said, why use Glide for Freespace? Freespace runs on Direct3D, hence no problemo getting it to run on modern cards.
Also, as a random detail, Freespace only had the "Descent" name in North America - everywhere else, it was called "Conflict: Freespace". The only relation to Descent is the developers - Volition is one of the two companies (the other one being Outrage) that have evolved from Parallax.

In my Voodoo2 & TNT days, I always preferred the Glide renderer over the D3D one. The textures were more detailed (though I understand there's a patch) and the special effects were much better .. the game just felt better too.
Take THAT efficient Germans!

Freespace's Glide renderer supports texture fullbrights (lighted windows and such). The D3D renderer does not.

So you are saying FS looks better in Glide mode? :o
*runs off to dl a Glide wrapper...*
