I finished the game, and I don't know, I just couldn't get into the ending. I'm a diehard fan of the first two games and Garrett is my favourite fictional character ever, so I desperately wanted to like the ending. But Garrett as a Keeper? Suddenly he didn't seem so fantastic anymore. I kept waiting for the moment of Thiefy brilliance that never came.
So I'm not a fan of the ending and, dumb thing is, I don't even know why.
I searched a few of the 'ending' threads to gather my thoughts on it, but had no revelations. Lots of other people seemed to like the ending, so tell me: what did you like about it? I hope someone can explain it to me in a way that'll make me appreciate it.
Oh, and why did Garrett have pinkeye in that last cutscene?

The pinkeye, I think, was a different representation of his mechanical eye.
As for why people like the ending...
It makes it circular - he is not a keeper, he is really the only Keeper, and he takes an apprentice in the form of the little girl - using exactly the words Artemus inducted Garrett with.
Simply enough though - it also marks the end of Thief (as we know it). Until someone George Lucas's it, it's over, done. Finito.

Reallt, the ending is a full circle kind of deal. I liked it because it was simple, yet powerful. No big explosions or Hollywood-style action. For me, the highlight of the ending was Garrett quoting Artemus at the end and smiling. When he spotted the mark of the Final Glyph on his hand, it seemed to suddenly connect in his mind that he was a Keeper, and never stopped being one. He's always been the one to uphold the balance, moreso then the actual 'Keeper' group.
As for the strange pink eye in the last cinema, well... Rustmonkey seemed to have a thing about drawing him differently in every cinematic throughout the game. No idea why.

Ok, I think I've figured out why I don't like it. I'd've preferred it if he hadn't turned out to be a Keeper or anything else, and just stayed plain old Garrett doing his own thing, not caring about 'balance' and whatnot. Thanks for the explanation though, I'm beginning to get it now.
By the way, the little girl being his 'apprentice' thoroughly disturbs me. :erg:

Ending was good. The problem was with the way cinematic were done. One word - Terrible.
I dunno how many people are fans of this cinematic style, but it has to be the worst thing I've ever seen and you could feel the effect on the game. I'd have preffered in-game cinematic, but for some reason, they went prerendered, and that too, nothing of Blizzard quality stuff. Felt like cardboards moving around trying to act and look cool. This is how you ruin a good looking/playing game. I enjoyed Thief 3 way more than TTDP (obviously), but I just hope someone comes up with better cinematic for this game in future.

Style, is something you either like or dislike.
The cinematics of Rustmonkey is totally stylistic, it doesn't pretend to be anything else.
I happen to adore Rustmonkeys Cutscenes, because it is an imperfect artistic representation of important events that shaped garrett. My imagination filled in the blanks and the sum total was greater than the parts.
I found the in-game 3D cutscenes to be lifeless, 'filler' cutscenes. That were poorly constructed (probably due to time constraints).
Everythings subjective until you know a great idea has been poorly executed.

I don't think anyone here is saying they don't like Rustmonkey's work. On the whole, I'm sure most all Thief fans love it. However, he seemed to stumble a bit in Thief III. Garrett looked different in every cinema, and in the last one he looked like a 20 year old with pink eye.
Personally, I think Rustmonkey does his best work when the focus is more on the enviorments, and the characters are darker (ala the style of Thief 1 and 2, and a couple of the Thief 3 ones). He definatly does a fantastic job with most of Thief 3's cinemas (I especially loved the one where Garrett first enters the Keeper library, the trial, and Gamall's transformation). However, a few he seemed to stumble in.

I loved it. It ended The City's and Garrett's Thief-Story by going full circle and making him a keeper.

RustMonkey is a company, not a person.

I know, I just always seem to refer to them as a single individual.
