i also like that you can SEE the loading zones so it's never a "surprise load" like many other games inlucing the old thief games i believe.
If you throw all the technical glitches aside, I think my main problem with TDS was lack of immersion and atmosphere. No briefing movies at the start of each misison was a huge problem for me, they are so memorable from the original Thief games. Then you have loading zones, which totally yank the player out of the illusion of being in the game world. The original Thief did not have them at all (I'm wondering if you've even played the original games since you didn't know that). The fact that you can actually see these loading zones makes it worse. Loot glint & arrow trails, same thing. Seeing water but knowing you can't jump in. TDS had constant reminders that you were just playing a game, while you could play T1/T2 for 2-3 hours and not even realize where the time went.
In addition to that, the story from TDS just wasn't that interesting. I've played through the first two Thief games probably 10 times each, I haven't gone back to TDS since my first time through 2 years ago. It's not because I'm stubborn or a fanboy, I just not interested. I'd rather play T2 FMs than endure the TDS plot again.

Ok, i've forgotten about that it seems. I really hope there will be a new Thief using UnrealEngine3 with no loading times.
Highly unlikely that we'll see a new 'official' Thief, but we're hoping we'll be able to please everyone with The Dark Mod.

Is it possible to make a full game or just individual missions in a FM way using the DarkMod?
Renault on 7/6/2006 at 13:17
sanity, you are aware there were two Thief games before TDS, right? :weird:

Oh, i'm sorry! My fault - I thought of TDS particularly when reading of loading zones....
Stop being sarcastic - I even played them, can you believe it? :)
P.S.
It's just that renault's winning f1 champ and I'm in grif cos' of that and your nickname has discouraged me a bit :p

I've already seen on this Forum plenty of newbies converting to Dark Project.

For me, the tiny size of TDS missions is a biggest setback.

That question kind of answers itself. A full game
is a collection of individual missions. You can release missions separately...or together as a full campaign, complete with briefing missions..etc. I don't want to pollute this thread with Dark Mod stuff, if you have any questions about Dark Mod, feel free to PM me. :)

they disrupt the flow of the level and take you out of the gameworld
And present you the horrible gorilla face. Some mad people actually say that it is Garret's :eww:
BTW, the first thing i modded in TDS and DE:IW - i've deleted all dds files with this "background art" and enjoyed black screen with loading indicator and text quotes (in TDS). It's a pity that it was impossible to display last screen of previous level during load, like the rest of games do.

TDS was way more unlinear. T1-T2 had missions like "ok follow this dude trough out the whole level and if you fall behind it's over" and "sorry, if you kill anyone in this mission it's over". Very linear games compared to TDS.
The mission you're referring to was a timed mission and so therefore (unless you were Speed Racer) you didn't have the time allotted in that particular mission for exploring. But that wasn't true of all the TDP/TMA OMs and you know it. The places Garrett was able to explore in all the other OMs were much more numerous than in TDS, which pretty much had you follow a certain designated path. Just the TDS training mission alone made me nuts due to the fact that it would only let me poke around just so much and no further. I disagree with you totally; TDS played more like a platform game than an RPG.

The games decides how you should play it, not you, that kind of gameplay totaly sucks.
My feelings exactly regarding TDS.

it makes perfect sense that they're looking stiffer than e.g
Laura Craft if you think about it, they're wearing armor, try jumping around like Laura with that..
That's '
Lara Croft', dear.
