I also found First City Trust Bank to be kind of linear because there was often only one way that you could get somewhere, especially if you were trying to avoid detection.
Bah!
I take it you weren't much of an acrobat then? Thief's I and II had a wonderful 1st person physics system. Remember, "avoiding detection" doesn't mean Garrett can't lose a few hit points from a well timed fall/jump.
I'm assuming you've actually played these first two titles and aren't just comparing Deadly to what you've "read" about them. The first two were nonlinear in both gameplay and design. As was said before, this game though a classic, was largely a simulation. *sigh*
:)

I meant more towards the point of getting to the vault. Because of the shut portcullis' I felt that I was being herded in one direction. Yeh the controls in the second game (have to admit I haven't had a chance to get my hands on the first game yet) are a lot tighter, but man, acrobatics? Jumping and mantling in that game was a bitch.

But the funny thing is, vurt's wrong again-- slaughtering everyone is in fact a viable gameplay style in classic Thief. It's not easy, but it can certainly be done.
What difficulty setting allow you to kill everyone? From what i remember many missions was game over if you killed anyone, my friend borrowed my Thief Metal Age disc a while ago and he said the same.

I'm fairly certain expert is the only difficulty setting where you can't kill anyone.

I think it was right about here that I realize we will never agree on anything. Thief is not Oblivion. Love them both, but they two very different games with very different mindsets. If you believe TDS was a step in the right direction, you are in a definitley in the minority on these boards.
I know i am a minority on these boards, at least most of my IRL friends (most of them RPG freaks) agrees with me here, TDS is the best in the series.
I'm a "bit" :cheeky: fanatic about TDS since i really dont like many games nowadays, even Oblivion was a huge disapointment for me. TDS really stood out with its atmosphere and gameplay.

I challenge you to name one level from either T1/T2 where you don't have some kind of alternate route.
Sorry been several years since i played it so i cant name them, i do recall that the levels often allow alternate routes just like TDS, but some levels felt really restricted and linear even in Thief1-2.

Again, you completelly miss the point of Thief. Thief is a sneaking game. You are a thief, not a murderer. If you just wipe everyone out, it's not Thief, it's Quake. LGS was trying to invent a new style of gameplay. One that does not include an "easy way out" by just killing all your opponents.
I know it's not Quake and i know killing isnt the main goal of the game, i wont quote myself again (third time). You really have no idea if you think killing everyone is the easy way out always since it's not.

IIRC of the original missions, only Strange Bedfellows (from T1) and Framed (from T2) prevented you from killing anyone on Normal difficulty - and they had good plot justifications for this.

I've never played any of the classic thief games on expert, i think i used the normal difficulty + im sure my friend who borrowed it a while back didnt play it on expert..

Ok that clears up that :)

Although I can't speak for TDP, in TMA you're usually free to slaughter as many people as you want save for a few levels when you play on normal difficulty. But to be fair on that difficulty you will often be starting with around 40 broadhead arrows, so the developers obviously wanted to leave that tactic as a disctinct possibility.
Out of interest, what was the limit for broadheads in TDS? I never stocked up on more than 12, to try and stop myself from going rambo, although it does make travelling the city easier sometimes.
And killing people in TMA can be quite easy if you time things right, usually guards hang in ones or twos. Just pick them off with an arrow if they are alone, or if there is a second one will almost always be an archer. In this case you just wait until they are both really close, you take out the swordsman with an arrow, and charge the archer with your sword. Two kills and no hit points taken. A bit boring really.

All thief games are great, beacuse they are interesting to play and have a protagonist you actually like, and want to see succeed !!
