All thief games are great, beacuse they are interesting to play and have a protagonist you actually like, and want to see succeed !!
There we go, thats the right attitude. Though, I have to say that TDS didnt give me the same warm, fuzzy feeling i got with TG or TMA. God, i still remember the first time i played Thief, it was T2, the "Uninvited Guest" mission that came with an Eidos Demo disc i got from some computer gaming magazine, i was addicted to Ultima IX at the time, and i was like : "OMFG! This is teh ownxor!!" and ever since then, ive tried to go stealth in almost every game i play, even FPS's like CS or Red Faction (which i love dearly), and in Morrowind (which is oh so much fun!!), and i cant wait to get ovlivion, sos i can stealth MOOOORRREEE, cuz damn it, IM ADDICTED!! :sly:

I played Oblivion as a Thief called Garrett. If you have good enough stats etc, you can play it like Garrett. Guess you know that as you like Morrowind. I may get Morrowind. I tried it once for an hour and got bored, but after Oblivion, I want to try it again.
Good that all of us can agree that Thief is great and so is Gazza (Garrett).

And killing people in TMA can be quite easy if you time things right, usually guards hang in ones or twos. Just pick them off with an arrow if they are alone, or if there is a second one will almost always be an archer. In this case you just wait until they are both really close, you take out the swordsman with an arrow, and charge the archer with your sword. Two kills and no hit points taken. A bit boring really.
Blackjack the first. While he is falling, backstab the second. Just as the first is hitting the ground "kneel stab" the bugger.
Back to that earlier thing, about acrobatics...
Please don't tell me you've never experience the joy of falling *many* feet to the safety of water, after having been spied out and pursued on a chase through places you hadn't planned on getting caught or chased?!
Also, I thought you were speaking about "linear" in terms of overall Mission/Gameplay design. You have whittled your evidence down from "linear across the board" to "well, that last 10 feet to the vault, boy you sure are guided".
:)
And yes, I also found Thief II to be more "combat oriented". In fact, the day it came out Feb 2000 (I only remember that because Might and Magic VIII came out the same damn day) I rushed home and that night played it. From the onset, you knew "something" was different. By the time I was at around Precious Cargo, I was killing everything in sight. For me, it was a more intuitive style than sneaking. It felt great! The tighter controls just made it sweeter. Imagine the surprise when you couldn't kill Karrass.

Red Faction (which i love dearly)
Red Faction was garbage. A half-assed Half-Life wannabe with lame weapons, awful AI, boring level design, a ridiculous plot, and scripted sequences that consisted of:
"Follow me! I'm with the Red Fac-- ARGGHHH!"

I agree. Actually i think Thief3 is the best of them, the suspense and horror is just right + the level design is miles ahead of the previous games.
QFT.
Quote:
The Thief games ARE horror games, but it's not ONLY that.
Wrong. It's a quasi-fantasy stealth game. You don't call The Mighty Boosh horror because it has monsters in it.

What i'd like to see is a Thief game with the Unreal3 engine since it can handle large areas without loading, a large open world like GTA where you decide what missions to do and who to work for.
Not gonna happen.

oh come on, your a meanie!! :erm: few games ive ever played have allowed me to blow shit up as much as RF did, and i dont play Half-Life, so thats not applicable in my situation. I admit, the AI is a bit slow, but the plot was ok. and dont even get me
started on Everquest... :nono:

In TDS I disagree that there was only ever one way to go, but this is the case in quite a few missions, and if it's not like that then there are multiple entrances/paths but all within a few metre radius of each other, eg. Rutherford Castle.
Still, I thought House of Widow Moira was the best for mutliple entrances. It almost made me enjoy using the spidey gloves!
Okay... I said almost...

ZylonBane isn't one to mince words. He's a very direct guy. That's why he's likeable. He often serves as a sobering Voice of Reason (a terse one) when things go
out of control batshit.
