I have to say... the thief series was one of the most interesting i had ever played. I loved the first... enjoyed the second and well... the third sucked. But all of them could be a whole lot better. With some little changes, little tweaks...
The Dark project was impressive. In 1998, the game was absolutely suberb... the character was well thought, the story alienating, characters interesting... the minute i got it, it was an uninterrupted journey till the end.
But well... things coulc be even better. I know, i know... in 1998 everything about videogames was still pretty green. In fact, Thief was one of the first to reserve a complex plot.
But the plot, the whole mood, although good, could have been an undelible experience... that would be awaken forever, even on a casual gamer's mouth.
The "gothic" mood.. well... more kind of medievel was good. But i think it was not dark enough. They could have produced a plot that appealed to an even older audience... and, of course, to teens... eager for adult content. As i said before, mood should have been darker. More blood, more death, sacrifices... horrific events, an intrigue even more complicated, twists so unpredicatable as one's last breath...
The characters personality should have been more explained. At least on a wider level.. to let us know actually how he is. Mentally... they gave us such few clues!... Cutscenes could have been rewritten, dialogue transformed... mission descriptions were great, but please... thats just not enough. More action, intense images, disturbing sounds... fast moving scenes, detailed environments. Its just to unrecognisable... which is good, by one side. Imagination left unchained... but.... i think that "blur" couldnt endure the pace of years. And it didnt.
For example... why not including some deep, dismaying approaches to an idea, so great at its foundation?... everyone said how creepy was the asylum level in thief 3... but come on... why not a mission on castle, a gothic one?... perilous enemies, magnificient rooms, large corridors, beautifully adornated... screams filling the air with the fragrant sound of fear, pure horror, decapitated heads lost throught out the scenery, lost limbs... blood... chants ekoating vaguely, the morbid impression of rituals as evil as cruel, sadistic tortures... given without remorse, resentment, with a smile of fierce satisfaction... gloomy portraits of undescribable dread, pure aversion... one that affects someone so much, that he helpless turns the face aside, in order to be relieved of such spectres... virgins... innocence... beauty, lust, fear... a fear that shrivers... that strangles, that affects the eyes, filling them with an expression of extreme aprehension...
Vincent, I think you've got your terminology mixed up. Gothic horror isn't bloody and gruesome in fact read H.P Lovecraft's Call of Cthulhu. It's not 100% pure but it's not very graphic either. It's all about atmosphere.
I didn't mind the Thief games. I suppose they could have made it a little more creepy but I suppose that's what the Hammerite tombs are for..
