Wrong. The "monsters" has nothing to do with it, the atmosphere in TDS is psychological horror at times, esp. in the Cradle-level. AND it does it much better than any pure horror game.
So for a game to have scary bits in it must be a horror? Interesting logic there.

I agree with toolfan, Thief isn't a horror...but it does have elements of it...amongst other things.

I've never said Thief is a pure horror game, perhaps you should read my post again?

Why would you to?

Anyway the example of the cradle is interesting because it is largly scary at the start and throughout because of music and mind games, but would you find it scary at all if there were no monsters (patients) lurking around? I think it is a combination of both? So you're both right, and wrong... Because I see it as the combination of the psychological sides of things and the monsters as well that create the scary side of things.

I think it was mostly the creepy sound. I was scared of the sound most :)
And zombies of course...

Don't know. Actualy I just wrote "why" but the forum didn't allow such a small posting, so I had to come up with a little bit more.

What do you mean "why", why what?
I agree with Sanity, the sound and also how the level is built up, the shadows (the whole _atmosphere_!) is what makes it scary.. but sure it's kinda scary when you see the first patient.. and i really dig that you must hide from them at first, you feel very vunerable.
