Not sure if it's canon or not, but fingers crossed Godzooky makes an appearance.

It's a tough line to tread. If you lean towards the melodramatic camp of the originals you risk being too derivative. If you amp up the pathos, you are too serious.
The trend to reinvent comic book and Saturday Matinee idols for the all growed up crowd makes good business and creative sense, even if the results have been mixed. The addition of (more) blood, guts and sex is pretty much inevitable and it is interesting to see how a more gritty human side to these stories is treated. But then, do we need super villains and giant radioactive lizards as vehicles for human dramas?
The Saturday cartoon me says, Hell Yes!

I wish David Cronenberg had directed Transformers.

Now on that, I will agree with you completely.

So I take it all you guys talking about how this seems to be taking itself too seriously have never actually seen the original Japanese Gojira? That movie was as serious as a heart attack.

The main thing for me seems to be (and yeah, I'm sorry for being that guy), was Godzilla ever enjoyable?

Yes. Yes they were. I actually haven't seen any of the power ranger style Godzilla movies with the massive campy monster fight scenes, but the 1985 movie was a direct sequel to the 1954 original and it was very dark and moody and had little mirth. It was straight up horror in some sequences. To each own obviously, I don't think I could enjoy the majority of the movies, but the IP definitely has potential.

Ok. So the 1985 film ignored every Godzilla movie made before it except for the original 1954 one. This one looks like it's doing the same thing. I wonder if it will count 1985 as canon as well or not. This just got better. American movie that doesn't ignore what the Japanese already did. Cool.
