No, this is not a dirty post.
See, I am not a HUGE gamer, by any description: but I loved Thief. I heard about it on the radio before it was released, and knew it was right up my alley. So when it was released here in Australia, I RAN to the store and bought my copy.
Over the years (despite persistent lack of energy in pursuing it) I have played and loved Metal Age, and recently T2X. (I've never done DS, and don't know that I would like it, from descriptions.)
But I never played Thief Gold.
Hell, I wasn't even AWARE of it until someone gave me a copy of Metal Age a couple of years after that was released, and stumbled upon this forum in 2005!
But for my birthday last month, I was given an almost MINT condition Thief Gold - still in it's box, and with the paperwork! (Praise be to the Taffer who loved those discs as much as they did, wherever you are out there....) So, with a single consultation of this excellent resource to get it working on my XP machine, I am away!

Thief Gold is fucking Gold.
I shit you not.
Three new missions with full voice acting and characters. More women, more thieves, more Stephen Russell (Raoul), and more.
I wanked to this game at the Opera House level.

I've finished The Dark Project for the first time and now I need Gold. :(
Need to find a copy now.

I had looked around a pretty good bit, but hadn't found one easily.
My Brother in law was a VERY diligent guy to find it: he had wanted to give it to me for Christmas, and the present arrived three weeks late for my birthday in April!
Still, the one I've got: man, someone took care of those discs. UNBLEMISHED.
I wish you lick finding it.

It's been years since I played the original, so I am straining my memory to compare the two, but my first reaction is: WOW! so PRETTY!
My second reaction is: WOW! So easy!
The guards pose no threat to me whatsoever, and my memory of the layout of Bafford's manor is accurate (it OUGHT to be: I spent hours scouring it my first time through.)
Break from Cragscleft is no more of a challenge, either. I remember the sensation of bowel loosening terror when the first corpse woke up too well not to find the zombies creepy (they will always give me a primal chill) but again: I am playing through these levels on Expert in under an hour!
Of course, that is what the difference between Thief and other games is. You don't 'level up' or get Weapons Upgrades - advancement in this game is because YOU get better. And with my wealth of experience, I am finding these missions to be more of a gentle work-out to stay in shape, than anything else.
The Bonehoard however, is still SUPERB. I remember almost HATING it the first time through, and the IMMENSE feeling of relief and personal satisfaction of completing it for the first time. This time around it is just enjoyable to really experience the joy of being a professional, and doing challenging work well.
Assassins I don't remember being this BIG. I take my time, and scour around the streets. Nothing to find, but it is a nice large map. Ramirez's mansion is a pretty simple layout, too, and poses no issues. Still, there are challenges and excitement ahead.

I managed to get a copy of Thief Gold recently, though mine came with a small supplement thing from Prima Games, I think it was a walkthrough to the 3 extra levels. (I didn't even know they did a strategy guide for Thief Gold. )
just out of curiousity here, but which of the new Gold missions does anyone here prefer?
I have to say I like 'Song of the Caverns' because the level design is pretty cool.
But what about you guys?

I think I like 'Song Of The Caverns' the best, too. I really like 'The Thieves Guild', but I always get lost going between the two dudes houses. Those sewers are a real nightmare. 'The Mages Towers' is a good mission, I really like the different mages and their powers. But the towers are really hard, with all those lifts and stuff. It can get very frustrating, especially when it comes to going back down - you just want to put on God mode and jump! :cheeky:

I consider myself lucky. I was GIVEN a sealed copy of Gold from a friend in Canada. Just a sealed jewel case, no box. It only cost him $5. It was in a 'bargain bin' of sorts on the counter @ his fave game store, and he knew I loved stealth games so he gambled that this was a good one (despite his never having heard of it,nor myself) and I was skeptical of it when I got it. I thought it was some bargain bullshit title, and be interesting for an afternoon or 2. BOY was I wrong. 5 years later and it is still the 1st game I re-install upon reformatting.
That one purchase changed my life. I now look at and even play my games differently as a result. It also got me interested in the rest of the series (Dark Project, Metal Age, and Deadly Shadows)(when they eventually were released) and in System Shock 2 + Ultima Underworld. For some reason UU had slipped under my radar despite my having played Ultima games to DEATH on my old 80's Amiga.
Anyway, I always recommend this game. When people ask me what genre/type of games I like I promptly respond:"Thief, System Shock, and Deus Ex".

I remember picking up Thief Gold sometime around April of 2000. I had about $20 worth of leftover money in my pocket from my Prom budget, and I'd picked up the box and looked at it a few times whenever I stopped by the mall. Finally decided to just plunk down the money and take it home and give it a go. Best impulse purchase ever.
