Ok, I reinstalled Thief Gold and played right away, without installing anything else (only did the multicore fix through the task manager). It started normally and entered the training but when I press esc to access the menu, the screen goes all black but I know the menu is "behind" it because I hear the sounds when the mouse passes over a button, it's as if there was a black overlay over it. What the hell?!

what vers of ddfix did you install before? DDfix greater than 1.1.1 use directx6 calls, whereas ddfix 1.1.1 and lower used directx9 calls. If you were using the latest vers of ddfix, try downgrading to 1.1.1

Ok, it all seems to be working now, only one minor annoyance. I used Darkscreen to set the res to my native res (1680x1050) and while it works fine, the gem and the compass only appear when the I'm pointing in some directions

Uh, what'd you do to make it work?
That compass / light gem problem sounds like a ddfix 1.1.1 problem. Unfortunately 1.1.1 had issues, but that seems to be what people have to use in terms of the newer gfx cards nowadays.

ARRGH, I can't believe it. Every time I click "esc" or to see the map/objectives, the game minimizes to th taskbar. Also, I made it work by using an earlier version of ddfix but now I have this problem
EDIT: what are the file(s) that stores your key bindings? I think I'm gonna reinstall it (but rebinding the keys is a pain in the ass)

Oof! Sorry 'bout the struggle. Not unusual for a ten-year-old game.
Anyway, make a back-up of your user.bnd, and from the SAVES folder, make a back-up of cfg0003.bnd. The cfg0000, cfg0001, and cfg0002 files are Thief Default, Unreal, and Quake binds, respectively, unless you overwrote them. Any other bnd files would be your custom saved binds, as well.

Ok, thanks. Also, I should mention that I fixed the minimizing by going into ddfix.ini and setting "window shrinking on menus" to "0". Let's see if I can FINALLY enjoy this game without problems :)

Little by little... I hope you get there.:)

Hmm that's odd, considering it should be on "1" to enable the fix.
