I loved that menu from the 1st game.

Err Butcher Bay and Athena have the same menu.
I didn't mind that it wasn't a particular good shooter cus frankly it was never a true shooter to begin with. It was just a good first-person adventure game with bits of shooting, sneaking, rpging, brawling, so on.

So, I bought this in the Steam sale this weekend (it was $5!!!). Was wondering, I have played Butcher Bay on both Xbox and PC. Should I play the re-make first or head straight for Dark Athena, heading into Butcher Bay re-make at a later date?
Keep in mind, my queue is rather empty.

I suggest you play Dark Athena first. Whilst it's enjoyable, imo, it's not quite as good as Butcher Bay.

Done. Started Athena.
I have one complaint, the lighting is WEIRD. The combo of the occlusion and HDR they use just ends up looking...off imho.

That and the controls are clunky..... er. I think. It's the only complaint that I had about the new engine over the old one. I used to be able to wail on baddies in the original EFBB, but in the remake and Athena I found it much more difficult to find that groove where all my combos would land.
The lighting gets annoying too, but on the other hand it's a bit of a tension device as well. Almost an art decision I'd say. I know everybody will disagree with me but i don't care.
It's kind of like in Mirrors edge when you try your damndest to turn down the HDR and bloom and you still get a white wash in some parts.

Make sure to watch the prisoners on the ship. Exbob in particular has some of the best animation and acting I've seen in a game.

dude, Malf...the animations I just witnessed in the prisoner bay, both general and especially facial, are amazing. I am confident when I say that I may have just witnessed the game that finally trumped Half Life 2's facial animations.
BTW, this game is incredibly fun and awesome. I love the gameplay from Butcher Bay, and this is more of it. Best $5 ever spent.

Man, all this talk of Dark Athena makes me wish Starbreeze finally released some info on their Syndicate game they've got in development...

News to me...what's all this now, N'Al?
