Eurogamer all the way. The place hosts some of the best authors I've read in years.

They don't exist. And I say this as someone who wants to get into games journalism.

Anyway Eurogamer convinced me with their Risen and Cryostasis scores - it's the
last site I'd check for reviews.
The Risen review(s) were dreadful and illustrating exactly what is wrong with all large review sites: a combo of using reviewers with little to no background, no real wish to get any background, a devotion to what can only be termed knobslobbering a few titles and nitpicking smaller ones to establish "credibility".
Sadly, Eurogamer
is probably the best of the major sites, if only because they hire some decent 3rd party writers on occasion and don't write direct to formula.

They did a rereview of Risen PC and gave it a 6/10 score. Before it was 4 or 5 or whatever.
Considering how garbage gets 7s and 8s, and you realize most sites aren't reviewing games so much as they're reviewing the amount of PR. Eurogamer does score on the low side, but ripping Risen is just inexcusable.

Eurogamer (and RPS, which has significant overlaps) are very reliable, but I always read Destructoid before putting any money on the line because if there is something that you aren't going to like about a game, it's almost certainly going to be in there. They are particularly brutal about their reviews, and don't hold back which means I have generally gone into purchases with my eyes open, rather than just reading that *insert blockbuster here* is the game of our times.

Pretty much the size of it, and why I stand by Destructoid. It does happen with moderate regularity that I disagree with them, but their opinions are alot easier to respect because Destructoid isn't strongly affected by PR(as websites go)
I also find them somewhat more honest. For example, the Demon's souls review didn't have a score because the reviewer wasn't able to finish the game (and admitted as much rather than just slap a score on it)

I really miss the Games Domain :(
Well, before it turned to shite, anyhow. I like to pretend that it didn't continue to exist under that name while steadily becoming more and more hideous to behold, and worthless to read.
Before that happened, though, it was the best.

I usually don't use reviews to make a buying decision, but I still check them out to have an idea of what the general opinion of a game is - and personal accounts of particular reviewers and forum people whom I am familiar with speak much more to me than some faceless site's opinion. I tend to enjoy Eurogamer's, Rock, Paper, Shotgun's and Gametrailers' reviews generally speaking.

I like Eurogamer.net. Much better written then most sites, they seem to be more willing to give a perfect score these days but that is just buyers advice. A game that is just good will get a 7, like it should get.
