May as well make this a place to list low-key mini games while we're at it. There are always times for these kinds of games, work being just one of them... Cave Story, Survival Crisis Z (if you play that you need to do a little trick to get it to work with Windows 7 though), I'd play DROD but it's not for everyone (for some reason it's incredibly addictive to me though), Transcendence, The Nameless, Oasis (a nice little puzzle/mini-civ type game), I used to blow a lot of time on the Hapland flash puzzles, or the "Grow" type of puzzles, Braid, Faster Than Light would be perfect for this, if you think of Defcon then Darwinia also comes to mind, I'd play a short campaign in Steel Panthers but war sims are one of my things... Uh, so there's some more for everybody if they didn't already know them.

I found that one of the few games I really enjoyed playing on the long term when I wasn't doing anything meaningful at work was (
http://pleasingfungus.com/Manufactoria/) Manufactoria which can be seen as an ancestor to SpaceChem. If you've got a technical mind it's easy to sink a lot of time in it, but the problem solving process is slow and chunk-based, small in scope and can be put aside for however long you want.

I like playing DooM and Civ 3 at work.

Civ 3 was always a great work game, since it runs on anything.

(

AV Club describes it as "A Zelda-clone with Skrillex's music blaring along with other wub-wub sounds to give the gaming experience that certain dubstep
je ne sais quoi" Sounds good to me!
This is actually pretty amusing.

FTL!
You can run it in a window and the game relies heavily on pause-time, so you can easily stop the action to switch over to something else.
