I've been meaning to replay BioShock. I've only played it through a single time. I just want to wander the locations again. The problem is that I'm not very excited to actually deal with the gameplay again.

I've asked this before and I'll ask again. If BS was such a shitty shallow game, what other
recent games are better? I can only think of a few I personally enjoyed more.
You should try out Penumbra Black Plague. That one impressed me quite a bit.
I didn't like Dead Space enough to finish it. Like you said, too much action. Being a lumbering man-tank with industrial tools gone weapons of mass destruction was kinda dumb actually IMO.
Also, I really liked Dark Messiah. It ain't perfect by any means, but I liked that little adventure and the atmosphere the game had.

So you liked Bioshock more even though it was worse. Well that's even better.
I realize I'm talking to the lowest manifestation of internet debating, but that's not what I mean. Of course I liked Bioshock better even if I recognized its problems as
I personally found it more fun.Bioshock and SS2 aren't even really in the same genre of gameplay.

it's surprising just how different the games play considering how similar they are and that they share so many of the same gameplay systems. I guess it just shows how much the mood & atmosphere of a game affect our opinions about it.
I tend to lay it all at the feet of movement and interaction mechanics (the sound thing really hurts it as well) and other subtle stuff. Nebulous things that come under the heading of "the feel of the game". Bioshock generally does all the surface stuff right but lacks some core component for a proper immersive experience. I dearly wish I knew what it was. All I really know is I should have enjoyed a game like this a lot more, even if it wasn't SS2 with better graphics like I hoped.

Well if you believe
that I can't help you.

I played Bioshock on Normal and died all the time! Though this is probably because I suck.

did u use telekinesis ? because this and the crossbow made the game a walk in the park. no other plasmids needed.

I agree that the subtle things make a big difference. And regarding the interaction mechanics - all of the machines you interact with in the game look, feel, and sound like arcade pieces. The Circus of Values, Ammo Banditos, Gene Banks, Gatherers Gardens, Swamis, etc. Even the hack interface feels like an arcade game. The splicer costumes, the way they sometimes over-act their parts in almost comedic fashion, the way they go around constantly barking out, it all adds up to a circus like atmosphere. It feels like an underwater theme park and not a grand city.
As much as I appreciate the excellent graphics & art, the story, and the inclusion of a variety of different game systems, I can't get immersed in the game because the story, setting, and atmosphere just don't mesh. It's like the teams working on the game never got together and really agreed on what the game was going to be about.

Ehhhh, it's not that clear-cut. He made promises that simply weren't kept in the slightest, and posted to tell us how awesome the game was going to be, how it was going to be SS3, et cetera. This continued right up to the day the game came out... when he suddenly vanished. That was, for the most part, it. I don't buy the idea that it was re-tooled late in development- Bioshock doesn't look like a game that was drastically altered at the last minute, and in any case, no mention of this was made. Especially damning is when he responded to a review that talked about how Bioshock had 'No skills, no abilities, no points... E.g. the player can hack electronic devices from the very beginning.' His response? 'I can tell you this is patently untrue.'
Some of the hate is misdirected. But a lot of the criticism leveled at his actions is justified.
I agree, I think this is the most fair viewpoint in the thread.

Double post but holy crap - you haven't even really played SS2 until you've done it with a different character from the one you used the first time. I would venture that SS2 is probably the MOST re-playable game in my collection, second only to some of the Elder Scrolls installments and Company of Heroes.
...Or Deus Ex

Why? I tried to start a new game several times, but each time I was bored very fast.
The problem with SS2 is the story and characters are rather shallow. I will agree playing with a different set of skills will change the gameplay a bit, but the gameplay of SS2 was too straightforward to be interesting to me. The strength of the game, for me, was the emotion raised by the story and the feeling of the unknown. It was the desire to discover what happened to the crew and what situation I will have to face. The killing enemies part was rather dull. In my point of view, BioShock was better in the killing part.
If you want an example of a game that could be replayable then I think something like Gothic is a much better model to follow.
BTW, I bought Morrowind and Oblivion and I couldn't stand those games for more than a few hours. Once the wow effect of the pretty graphics wore off, there was nothing left for me. It's too a point where I simply had no interest whatsoever in Fallout 3 simply because it was made by Bethesda. I guess we have completely different tastes when it come to video games.

I also used telekinesis a lot, I will agree it's overall the most powerful plasmid, but a lot of times other plasmids were also very useful. Anyway, reading from other people it's obvious there are several strategies that work well with BioShock.

I'm glad I wasn't the only one.
