Wiki sez: She is best known for her expressive vocals,
broad soprano vocal range, and a diverse and eclectic musical style
LOL, trying to use Wikipedia as a credible source for anything besides raw facts and statistics. This just keeps getting funnier.
Extracts like the example you used are still some wiki editor's opinion. Bare in mind that
anyone can edit Wikipedia. Raw facts = stuff like place of birth, marital status. Statistics = height, age, etc. What you posted is neither of those.

I'm no fan of Bjork's but if you've seen her (
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P6a4GVt_T8g&feature=related) live performances it's quite clear she
can sing. It's her unusual melodies and compositions plus her tone, which is grating for many people, that people mistake for a lack of singing ability but as far as pitching and sustain goes she is good and much, much better than most rock singers.

Of course she can sing. Bjork has to be one of the most talented, groundbreaking, and influential artists of the last 20 years. dethtoll, you list crystal castles as a band you liked in the music thread in commchat, do you feel that the singer for that band, who is almost atonal with her singing at times, falls under the same category?
As further proof, see (
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F5ndoBdm0yY) A. (
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1a1bfbk_yQU) B, and (
http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x2yp3_bjork-triumph-of-a-heart) C which all plainly show that she CAN sing with a clearly defined melody and tune. Her vague, flowing style is a deliberate choice that is certainly an acquired choice, but shouldn't be written off as "not being able to sing".
The final video is actually one of my favorites, and is a good demonstration of bjork's much lampooned concept that "everything is music". Medulla was an incredible achievement as an almost entirely a capella album.

I've actually never heard a single song by Bjork until this topic's links.
So, in conclusion, Ken Levine is a liar because Bjork is a bitch because she can't sing except that she can.

I see that the London smog is finally getting to you, Aero.

It's a better source than no source at all which is what those arguing the other position are giving. No sources, no reasoned argument, just 'I don't personally like her so she must be undeservedly successful only through some sort of Icelandic witchcraft'.
Still waiting on what might have been a better track?
Beyonce? Can she officially sing? I dunno.

You are demanding sources on an OPINION. Sorry, but only Aerothorn gets to do that.
Tenkahubu on 30/11/2009 at 15:35
I didn't ever demand sources.
I don't think that you have to explain or justify taste, but I think that when something has enough cultural support it has to be recognised.
eg: I hate Drum&Bass music passionately, but enough people enjoy it that it has to be considered as music.
On the technical side, it's possible to look at singing ability from a classical view point and decide if someone is a good singer by what they can and can't do.
I'd argue that this isn't relevant to Bjork's case anyway because there's no evidence that she can't sing normally if she chose (shit-on-purpose is one way of putting it) but...
My friend is a good classical singer, but when she recently recorded some Pixies covers the results were not good. I think the same principle can probably be applied to what Bjork does, or other unorthodox singers.
So ability is relative to what you're trying to do.
PS: If you mute Bjork and play DJ Hixxy in another tab it actually weirdly seems to work and the lyrics strangely fit at points. (I do hate that song though)
