henke: It's early days. Stick with it, and try to manage your expectations on the technical side of things.
The FMV is cheesy, but still appreciable if you set your expectations lower, and have some sympathy for the actors who were obviously reacting to an empty blue screen which sometimes ended up being a bit different to what they had in their heads :) It reaches for the giddy heights of "decent" on occasion, but even back in the day, I would never have recommended ROTH on the strength of its FMV.
It's an adventure first and foremost, and you have plenty of exploration still ahead of you. I don't remember what "easy" puzzles entails, but that sounds like something you'd select if you wanted to concentrate primarily on the action and combat qualities of the game, which I think is probably a mistake (and especially so given the game's age).
I'm sure that nostalgia helps me to forgive the elements which have aged poorly, but I'd be surprised if it didn't at least somewhat win you over once you've delved further in.

My good deed for the day: corrupting a GAME store employee into checking out GoG. Ahh, the anarchy of the whole thing.

Sooooo....anyway to remap the mouse buttons and have mouselook in RotH? :)
Just curious.

I am playing on "Easy" Adventuring so maybe they're more complex on "Hard"

Easy puzzle mode means the game automatically equips the right item when you try to use an object that requires it, assuming you have the item in your inventory. Most of the time it's just a nice feature that keep you from having to remember which key goes with which door (and having to use the clumsy inventory interface), but there are some traditional "use X on Y" and "combine Y with Z" puzzles in the late game that otherwise require a little more thought.
Honestly, both the adventure and shooting parts of RotH are weak even by 1997 standards. But the atmosphere and exploration are simply top-notch, and I can't think of another game that plays quite like it. Aside from the 50/50 split between FPS and adventure game, it's really cool to wander around searching for clues and equipment, reading dusty old maps, and trying to figure out where you are in the spooky levels and what weird place you'll stumble into next. The game has, like, six honest-to-god mazes though, which now just seems quaint at best.

GOG is teasing something again.
28 hours to go.
The sequence to date has been:
What Game Made You Dream of the Stars?
What Game Made You Ride with the Outlaws?
What Game Made You Fear Your Past?
What Game Made You Go To the Underworld?
What Game Made Monsters Fear You?
What Game Made You Feel Lite [sic] a Hero?
What Game Made You Afraid of the Dark?

Hmmm, maybe they've secured the LucasArts catalogue?
Thirith on 13/4/2011 at 13:48
Where would the "fear your past" thing come in?
Matthew on 13/4/2011 at 13:50
"Now I know I must go ... BACK to the MANSION!!"
Edit: hmm, some of those GoG guesses aren't bad ones. KoToR as the 'fear your past' one, for example.
Or indeed, how about:
What Game Made you Dream of the Stars? - Worlds of Ultima: Martian Dreams
What Game Made You Ride with the Outlaws? - Strike Commander?
What Game Made You Fear Your Past? - Bioforge
What Game Made You Go To the Underworld? - Ultima Underworld, of course.

If they've secured Origin's catalogue, that means Wing Commander and Ultima. Holy shit! Yes!

Unlikely, especially with EA cracking down on sites offering
Ultima IV. I get the impression they've got plans for the IP.
