The thing about good old games is that half the time, they don't even release the best version of the game and there's no way of really knowing.
For example, if there is a superior windows version of a dos game, they will release the dos version simply because of "huurrrr dosbox" rather than release the game with better graphics / extras.
In that sale for example, earthworm jim, if i remember from looking at the different versions a while back, was released on dos and then later on sega cd and windows as a special edition with extra sound effects, possibly better graphics (though could be wrong) and an extra level. Maybe other stuff too but i am no expert.
There is nothing at good old games that tells you whether you are getting the windows or dos or whatever version of a game and most of the reviewers are just reviewing the game rather than the gog version, which makes their reviews rather unhelpful.

You know, I never liked Earthworm Jim. Then I found out that Doug TenNapel is a colossal motherfucker (
http://www.destructoid.com/earthworm-jim-creator-no-friend-to-gay-people--202271.phtml) who started an argument about how gay people are awful, America is the best damn country in the world, and Christianity is the only thing worth doing. The comments are gone, he took down the whole system, but here's some of his real gems:
(he keeps misspelling 'orifice' as 'office' btw)
Quote:
But in America (and this would be alien to Canada and Europe) we have a thing called freedom of Religion, freedom of expression, freedom of creed and freedom of speech.
Quote:
It is specifically our right to hold our “minority” religion and vote accordingly that makes America unique. So though the majority thinks every church ought to be forced to perform gay weddings, the minority traditional religious perspective is protected by the Constitution...and be careful how you undermine that right because it's the same place where we find our right to be our race, be our sex and be treated equal to others. ANd the rights of the minority in this instance are in tact. Everyone, regardless of sexual identity, has the right to marry someone of the opposite sex. That's the law, it's fairly applied to all. There are minority groups that are for multiple marriage partners, and we put those more controversial ideas up for a vote. Nobody seems to mind the outcome of those results when they're in fashion with pop-culture.
Quote:
I resent the implication that a country can't say, “A man and a man are significantly different than a man and a woman.” That's the REAL terrifying message. That's where we're at. People disagree about this important issue, and the gays in my neighborhood don't get vandalized, don't get called names (at least not any more) but I've seen members of my church mocked for being traditional, my side is losing their jobs simply because they won't endorse your side.
Quote:
You can't be for pressured endorsement of an ideology without being completely against freedom. Freedom to marry a man is one form of freedom. Freedom to oppose same sex marriage is another. These two ideologies are in conflict and we need to be very careful one what grounds we choose to mow over the rights of either party. Does one side have the right to change what the word “Marriage” means for ALL of society?
Quote:
"What argument do you have specifically against letting two adult men who love each other marry?"
The same argument I have against letting a man take a dump in the ladies room. And office appropriate for one sex isn't automatically appropriate for another, no matter how much a man loves taking a dump in the ladies room.
Welp.

Errrr okay.
I must admit i've never played it but i remember it looking interesting from when i was little, so wanted to see what it was actually like.
Apparently the dungeon keeper release is the dos version too. Oh dear. They ignore the issues with these things too. Also, i cannot imagine dosbox running dungeon keeper that well unless you have a really new computer - especially considering it can't handle system shock 1 (let alone at high resolution).
For games that didn't have a dos version or only had a dos version then it seems good, but i do wish they would be a lot more up front about everything.

That`s pretty crazy ;) My favourite is when he says: "America is the best country in the world because it's 78.5% Christian"...well, Poland is 90+ and Ireland 87%...what now, dawg?
Ulukai on 20/6/2011 at 18:54
Invade Poland?

So the guy's a bigot. Or he's not, who cares? Any bigotry or Christian supremacy themes in Earthworm Jim? Didn't think so. Let tabloids do tabloid material. Focus on the games.

Yes, because trawling through their forums or comments which may or may not have the answer is very convenient and not time consuming at all.
Especially with games you have not played before and are unaware of differing versions.
It wouldn't be hard for them to state what version they use. But it seems they always take the lazy dosbox option.
But alas, hurr all you like.

Separating the art from the artist doesn't make the artist less useless, or, in this case, the art less shit.
