Probably just because it was my first :p Well, it had the decent turn-based combat of the earlier games plus an early version of the 'living world' aspect of the later ones - people with day / night activities. lots of usable gubbins. It had a good plot too, though Ultima V was probably better from that point of view (I had some technical problems trying to play that one).

If I only play through one Wing Commander game ever, would Privateer be the one to play?
Matthew on 3/9/2011 at 09:29
Mmmmmwell, I would say WC 3 or 4 (or heck, 1) personally but if you have an affinity with pre-rendered FMV then Privateer 2 was always pretty highly regarded.

I never finished Privateer 2. Dunno what it was - the first Privateer appealed more to me than the B-movie aesthetic of the second game, perhaps, and Privateer 1 felt more like a proper Wing Commander spin-off in terms of controls and gameplay. There was something slightly 'off' about Privateer 2 IMO.

Ultima I/II/III are historically important in paving the way for IV, and had lovely cover art by Denis Loubet, but are hardly the sort of games we'd play for more than five minutes in a month and what we'd probably look at as mere curiosities now.
Not necessarily. You need to make a mental effort & break through that fuzzwall of nostalgia (tricky!), but once on the other side it`s all good. Yes, the graphics are basic, but also charming and anyway it was all about imagination then, not how many shaded triangles are in a triangle.
I was late to Ultima party (7th 1st I think) and so tried the first one last year -also thinking I`ll last 5 minutes. But no, got well into it with mapping and all. It`s very slick for an ancient RPG, surprisingly.
Tried 1st Wizardry at the same time, and this wasn`t so pretty. This game is uber hard, unforgiving, and a bitch to map too.
Would definitely go for Privateer - much more open than Wing Commanders.

I enjoyed privateer but felt it was a bit limited. From memory there were only four player ships and the galaxy area, although reasonable, felt a little cramped. Out of the three games available at the moment I'd probably lean towards WC2 as I found the storyline much more enjoyable than the others.
However, as Matthew suggests, one of the later ones (WC4 being my personal recommendation) would probably be better if you're really going to only play one from the series.

Today's addition: (

Never played it, but it's supposedly a decent hack&slashy kind of affair. Any thoughts?

Nox is fun and is definitely a good grab for that price, if you like hack'n'slash rpg's. Too bad the mp is a bit...odd.

I second this. I need a replacement for a lost disc anyway, thanks GOG.
