Maybe I'm misreading it, but I got the impression the plan was to continue 2 old game releases a week, but to add one additional new game release on top of that. Old games would still not be allowed to exceed the $9.99 price point, whereas new games could be whatever rights holders/GOG agreed on. Hopefully the old game releases would be completely unaffected by the new plan, in terms of cost or release frequency.

It still amazes me how many people apparently think that GOG stands for "Good of Games".

If they provide good catalog and deals they'll stay afloat.
I can't really guess as to their financials, but I'd believe that they've probably been profitable. The expansion can really only mean one of two things: either GOG was not profitable before, and this new direction is intended to move them toward profitability, or GOG just wants to attain greater profitability by expanding their market. There's a third option, too, sort of: GOG is simply altruistic and wants for more games to be DRM-free, which may be true, but it couldn't possibly be the only motivation.
The jab at Valve seems to indicate that they're on the offensive, in any case. Is it out of desperation or just dickery? It's something I'd sure like to know.

Given that they're Polish, probably the latter.

The middle finger analogy seems a little extreme, but I guess it could be interpreted that way. They're certainly jabbing at valve with the obvious red valve on the back of the knight's helmet.
I heard about this news on pc gamer, and somebody interviewed a gog rep who claimed that gog is not really a competitor to steam. In their current state i'd say that's a reasonable thing to say, but because they are relauching as just gog and will have newer releases, I call bullshit. It's clearly a move towards competing with other services, even if thier main motivation is to provide people with DRM free games.

“As a matter of fact, I think that GOG.com is more of an alternative than a competitor. There is still no way to fight against Steam, for example, something we knew from the very beginning of GOG. The only way to shine is to offer an alternative model to gamers. Being different is our daily obsession to make us stand out from the rest of the field.”

Nothing about that ad made any logical or even metaphorical sense, so I wouldn't waste much time trying to divine any precise interpretations of it.

Their main motivation is to make money.
They just believe that offering games DRM free makes them differentiated enough to get people to buy from them rather than the competition. To an extent, I think it's working.

Do you know this as fact? Though you are probably right since obviously every business wants to make money.
Also I said "if their main motivation" not necessarily that I thought that was the case, I was just going off what wonderfield brought up.
In any case, I can't really see this as being a bad thing other than it'll probably piss off their core fans who wanted a special separate service that only served older games. Personally I've used gog in the past and I see this as a great alternative to steam.

All businesses exist for the purpose of making money, either for the owners, employees, or shareholders. The guys at GOG just think that offering games without DRM is the best way to do that, and if they get enough good new games I think they'll end up raking in the dough.

Yes. GOG is not a charity.

In that case, I would've expected you to have said " even if their motivation
was to provide people with DRM free games". Would've avoided confusion. But point taken.
