Not sure if it's actual news, or it's just me who missed it until now, but you can (http://www.gog.com/en/witcher2/backup/) register your Witcher (the first) cd key on gog for a backup copy, like with W2.

Weird, I don't think my copy of the first Witcher has a CD key.

Edit: N/m, found it one of the manuals. Strange I never had to enter it.
