So what's the main differences between these and the 'main' Ultima series, then (beyond the change in setting)? Why are they called World of Ultima?

They're basically spin-offs exploring different kinds of settings, but using the same tech and gameplay as Ultima VI. The main character is the Avatar, and series regulars have cameos, but the games are sort of half-canon only - they're a bit like "What if?" stories. "What if the Avatar travelled through time and was part of a Jules Vernes-style expedition to Mars?" "What if the Avatar found a pulp-style Lost World, with different tribes and prehistoric animals?" They're pretty much time-outs from the themes and story arcs of the regular Ultima games.
Origin had planned a third Worlds of Ultima game, set in Arthurian legend, with the U7 tech, but then Electronic Arts happened (IIRC) and the game never saw the light of day, sadly. (The U7 tech is still my favourite engine of the series.)

So gameplay-wise they're pretty much the same, it's only the stories that makes them 'different'?
Thirith on 18/6/2012 at 14:23
Exactly. If you liked Ultima VI, you're likely to like these; if you didn't, you won't, unless you're a huge fan in the scenarios.
Of course, if you didn't like Ultima VI, you're dead to me; may rabid mongbats eat your toes and headlesses pee on your doormat!

Ok, cool.
Never played Ultima IV.

I forgot to mention: Martian Dreams was produced (IIRC) by one Warren Spector.

Strange people are voting for Myst over The 7th Guest, despite the latter game costing more (making the extra 20% discount that much better), and the former having been on sale oodles of times before.

That's not even a contest. 7th Guest any day of the week over Myst.
Malygris on 20/6/2012 at 05:44
Myst is the better game. Most people aren't going to put any more thought into it than that. Hell, I voted for it and I already own it.

If I remember correctly, Cryostatsis was designed for Nvidia cards and so does NOT play nice with ATI cards. Certainly didn't with mine.
