Think of TOEE as XCOM: D&D Edition, and you're about halfway there. While there is a bit of a story in there, and you do interact with NPCs, gets quests, and all that good stuff, the main draw of the game is the combat.
It also has a really interesting soundtrack. It's not the usual bombastic fanfare you get in most RPGs. (

edit: and it goes without saying that the first thing you should do is track down the fan patch. It is a Troika game, after all.

An XCOM game set in medieval times. Now THAT would be interesting.
Be alot of Ash in Army of Darkness type moments though of "this is my boomstick" *bam*.

I always wanted to check it out since I love everything else by Troika, but heard it's more of a hack/slash/combat than story/rpg heavy game and apparently has a lot of broken mechanics (har har troika)
It's based on a pure Hack'n'Slash module for D&D, but they added some story to it (mostly before you go into the temple itself).

Not interested in the game itself (it's Troika, it's DnD, not happening) but I'm definitely grabbing that soundtrack!

At least watch some gameplay videos. It being turn based makes it play and feel quite a bit different than the other D&D games of that era.

Since I played the hell out of Wizardry 7 in my youth, I took this chance to try the Gold version. And, good grief the voice acting is terrible. The narrator is okay but the characters sound like they grabbed various members of staff, shoved a script in front of them and said "do an old man voice" or "do a cartoon villain".

I dunno, this one always gets looked at as the bad apple in Bioware's oeuvre (well, their pre-Dragon Age 2 oeuvre, at least), but I always quite liked it. Even though it's made pretty clear early on that you're the Chosen One Who Must Choose yet again. And even though the ending feels a bit rushed.
Still, if you want to punch elephants in the face, this game could be for you.
