(

Never played this myself, but I've heard good things.

Heh, I just did a replay of Rune after playing it when it came out. I'd say it's worth $5 or $10 (but not much more), mainly due to the nostalgia factor for me and the fact that there aren't that many third person "shooters" that are melee combat only on the PC. It's a very gloomy game, most of it is indoors in dark caverns, there's no humor. Graphics are typical Unreal 1 engine, decide for yourself if that's good or bad.
At first I thought "I can't believe I once liked this game" because after the introduction levels there are some levels in "Hel's domain" which are really dark with confusing layout. But once you've cleared those, better levels follow and I started to enjoy myself again. Combat is fairly fun but slightly clunky; often I clearly hit a monster but the hit didn't register, or a monster took a swing at me and clearly missed, but it still registered as a hit.
If you like swinging axes, hammers and swords, decapitating monsters and Viking mythology you could give this a try. I did run into a game stopping crash however in the penultimate level, it kept crashing at the same spot. I fixed that by playing through that spot in Safe Mode (all Unreal 1 engine games have a safe mode).
If you buy it at a later time when it's not on sale, get it on Steam (also $10) because ACHIEVEMENTS LOL! :p

Darkstone was fantastic. You had to keep yourself fed (and could die of hunger: there was even a "cursed hat of bulimia" -srsly- that made you hungry no matter how much you ate). Your character also actually aged, so as you progressed through the game, if you took too long you'd start losing strength and gaining wisdom, and would eventually die of old age (at a random point past 80 or so). You could reverse this by finding and drinking potions of youth (-1 year per potion), and if you actually reached "legendary" level you just...sorta permanently became 25 years old because why the fuck not.
It was silly. And it had the hammiest voice acting ever.

Same here, but you and I have gabbed about this game too many times over the years. There's a thread about it here if anyone wants to hear us gush on and on about it.
