I never played these, as I didn't have a pc at the time. But I really really wanted to!
Curious to see how they stand the test of time.

I remember X-Wing being hard as nails and unfair to boot; many of the missions were predicated on you knowing that at 5 minutes a Star Destroyer would hyperdrive in on that side of the frigate you were protecting, and that they'd launch a bunch of TIE Bombers at 7:50, so you'd already have to fly towards empty space to have a chance of intercepting them.
TIE Fighter was still hard, but it was fairer, and it was altogether designed better. IMO it's clearly the best of the bunch.
I never played X-Wing vs TIE Fighter, but X-Wing Alliance was fun and had more story and characters, although the writing wasn't exactly great; TIE Fighter didn't do as much storytelling, but it fared better with what it did. There are great fan models for XWA, but if you install all of them the engine quickly shows its limitations. I would force choke for an updated X-Wing and/or TIE Fighter with the kind of graphics you get in Elite: Dangerous but maintaining the general gameplay.

Well, then we'd better hope that some of the new space combat games on the horizon succeed so that the big name publishers(who own the licenses you want) take notice.

Hurray! Indie and Sam and Max, too! \o/
Now if they could release 'em, I can finally see if Rebel Assault 1/2 were any good.

They weren't. Well not the first one anyway. Rebel Assault was one of the first games I bought on CD-ROM and it was so fucking bad.

Rebel Assault was fucking horrible. I'd rather see Rogue Squadron get released, and that wasn't particularly good either.
The only Lucasarts game I'd kind of like to get a digital copy of is X-Wing Alliance. Well, and Grim Fandango HD whenever it comes out. But X-Wing Alliance is pretty much the gem of their 90's Star Wars stuff, it's 3-D accelerated, and you can hack the exe to get it working in non-4:3 resolutions.

Oh Dear God, Rebel Assault was the fucking bane of childhood. Such a woefully shit game. Even by rail shooter standards it was fucking garbage.

You guys realise that after reading all this, now I absolutely have to play it, right?

You live in the country which consistently produces the worst music and movies on the planet, so I'm not surprised by such a stance.
