Do tell.
It's simple. GOG is just a web based store. A great store, sure, but just a store nonetheless. Steam is a little platform in and of itself. You can buy the games, install them, keep them organized, post screenshots, keep a friends list going, host multiplayer games, upload and download mods, all that good stuff right from inside the client. It's a lot more convenient and handy overall.
This is what I'm hoping Galaxy fixes. As much as I like Steam, I don't want it to be the only choice out there. GOG is in the best position to compete directly with Valve on the games front.

and gives you so much more in comparison.
The one major feature that won't need a specific implementation for each game that Steam has and Galaxy isn't currently scheduled to implement is the built in streaming service. Trading Cards (and subsequently Badges) and Cloud Saves both need some sort of developer interaction for each game before they can be used. Friend list (along with "Invite to Play"), Achievements and most other features of Steam are more or less scheduled for inclusion in Galaxy somehow.

Cloud saves would be really nice to have, but I'm pretty meh about trading cards and streaming. The cards are a cool little feature, but I wouldn't feel like I'd be missing out on anything if Valve decided to get rid of them tomorrow. Same with streaming. I could find a few good uses for it, I'm sure, but I'm not all super excited about it, either.
As long as Galaxy covers the basics, a la Steam 5-6 years ago, I'd be really happy with it.

Screw anyone who says GOG games "just work". I recently picked up Gabriel Knight 3 during a promotion (being the one in the series I never played) expecting to just install the thing and play. 2 hours later I'm still pulling my hair out facing error messages, crashes, "please insert CD" messages, swapping .exes, epic slowdown, etc.
Just in case, you know there's a 30 day money back guarantee if a game doesn't work for you, right?

I was going to post a link about Gog Galaxy, but I see I've already been beaten to it.:p
I also think it could potentially be a great alternative to steam.
However, personally, while I am curious to try the galaxy client, i'm unsure whether i'd want to keep it as yet another client when i've already got Origin and Steam, with Steam being my main client that I use.
I do really dig the idea that GOG Galaxy's online functionality (particularly the bit about not needing to be connected to play your games) is completely optional.
That's one thing that it definitely has going for it over Steam.

Yea, that's kind of the one nice thing about Steam's monopoly - if you're a PC gamer, pretty much all your achievements, screenies, user profiles etc. are all in one place. Meet another gamer you wanna play with? Just trade steam names. Now imagine half your achievements on GoG, half on Steam, some friends here, some there, and what if you wanna play with a guy who owns a game on GoG but you own it on Steam? And what if other similar programs take off into the future and now you're split between 3-5 different clients and user systems. Yea we coped with it pre-Steam days, but it's so much easier now :p

Don't ask me how it works or what constraints there may be, but FYI one of the Galaxy features GOG is promoting is "Cross-play" whereby you can play multiplayer games with people who have that game on Steam! I'm certainly keen to find out more about that.
The features list says:
Quote:
Crossplay-enabled games offer online play between GOG and Steam. Because where you buy your games shouldn't prevent you from playing with friends.
I do note the "enabled" part -- presumably this isn't going to 'magically' work by default.
The FAQ says:
Quote:
Cross-play doesn't require any setup or configuration. Steam users won't need to create GOG.com accounts or install GOG Galaxy, while GOG.com users won't need to create Steam accounts. Just log in, launch your game, and start playing online!

I agree, half the games I bought on GOG simply do not work, at all. I tried playing Soul Reaver 1, and it's just a complete mess. I mean it's easier to run a PS1 emulator and play the PS1 version than trying to get that game to work on a modern PC. Why they are even allowed to sell things that don't work is beyond me. Same thing goes for Steam really, I have a special category in my Steam library labeled "useless" for just those kind of games. At least with GOG you can have a refund. Now I've pretty much made it a rule never to buy old games.

Also, the Darksiders stuff is 75% off (instead of 60%) if you grab it all at once.
